Ive heard mention of these off and on over the years since getting into the Z Car scene, can anyone tell me the pros and cons of these compared to the normal Z31 Turbo. All I really know thus far is they have a diff engine, and werent exported to USA

From what I know, it was a 300ZX 2+2 with an RB20DET factory with a five speed and a limited slip unit in it. A limited edition Japanese market Z that was built to still give performance while retaining the taxes of a 2.0 liter engined car.

Doesnt have to be a 2+2. But yeah, they came with a top mount intercooled RB20DETs(thats the I6 Skyline engine). There was a 300ZR too, but it had a VG30DE. The Z31 in Japan had a bunch of different engines, while we only got two.

The 200ZR is slow in comparison to a regular Z31... The RB20 only puts out about 170-180HP vs 220-230HP of the JDM VG powered Z31s, keep in mind those VG power figures are for here in Australia/Japan only. In the U.S you guys got watered down versions of the Z31 at only 200HP but even then the 200ZR is still less powerful...
The main difference between an RB and a VG is that the RB is higher revving but less torque and the VG obviously lower revving but higher torque. My friend has a 200ZR, they're cool for something different but still not as fast as a regular Z31.

Dont get me wrong, they're a cool car and look unlike any other Z. It has the later model rear end with fenders similar to the earlier models but they're rolled a touch wider. It's just that alot of people have the misconception that because it's JDM and an RB that it's better when that's just not true. The whole RB rave is an American thing, they're one of the most commonly used engines over here. My Mum's Skyline has an RB30 for example and it's still not as quick as my NA Z31. With serious mods though it could pull some nice 1/4 times, but the same can be said about the VG powered Z's aswell...
If you really wanted to turn heads then dropping in an RB26DETT would be the ticket but a very expensive ticket at that lol

Actually I think the earlier Z31s were rated gross, while the later are rated as net.
Got to zzzing.net and look at the Z31 section, you'll see in the years they made both the RB20DET cars and the VG30ET cars the VG30ET is only rated at 195PS and it has a little (net) next to it thats not present with the ratings of the VG30ETs before they came out with the RB20DET.
I might be wrong, but thats my theory on it.

The Z31 200ZR is such a great parts donor if you want to put an RB into an S30 or S130 (oil pan donor)...
And not to mention that the RB26 does fit in the 200ZR quite nicely!
That makes it no slouch!

My friends 200ZR is slower than my 300zx that I do know. The very same engine in the Skyline Passage is rated at about the same aswell, this is from wiki...
Passage GT - 2.0 L RB20DE DOHC I6, 155 hp (114 kW)
Passage GT - 2.0 L RB20DET DOHC turbo I6, 180 hp (132 kW)
The VG30 is more powerful, by how much I don't know exactly but according to most sources the difference is fairly significant.

And yes, an RB26 in a 200ZR would really be something special! You could pull some mean times at the strip with that setup!

200ZR's also came with the VG20et a more economical and yet still powerful engine. Comes with the T3 ball bearing turbo, ya get addicted to that sound.
The VG20et i had came in a 86 JDM 2+2 slicktop.
