NZR: 71 Benz

General Chat

Q:

My neighbor has a powder blue 1971 Mercedes benz 4-door with the big 4.5 liter engine that was mechanically fuel injected. He is the ORIGINAL OWNER. It has been sitting for a while, moved ocassionally. He does not want to part with it, but he knows that I fix cars up all the time, and he would love to see this car fixed up. He said he is willing to give me the car for $1000. Here's the low down:
Straight body
No structural rust whatsoever (california forever)
4.5 liter V8
low miles
paint and chrome will shine up very well
the (auto, of course) transmission and rear end are covered in oil
he said he hasn't tried to start it up in a while, but believes it will start
Basically, I would absolutely LOVE to have this car as a side project. As of right now, I had 2 daily drivers at my disposal, so this car would in no way be relied on. I want to know if anyone here knows how much it might cost to seal the tranny and rear end, or if you think this deal is worth it. Thank you very much.

I've got an 85 SD. The old ones are cult cars & as much fun as the Z.
Try http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/
or http://mbca.cartama.net/ for more info. Every time something is wrong with the diesel, it turns out to be really minor.
Anyone can drive a new car.

Sounds like your neighbor has the W116 Chassis and is an incredible car - I had one as well. The designation of the car is 450SEL and by todays standards its not the most spine tingling in performance but heck its a great car and back then, few cars could run with them.
I have not ruled out getting another one as I love their lines and I love old cars. My favorite is the monster 6.9L version which stock had just under 400ft.lbs of torque in the same chassis as the one your neighbor has.
Awesome and the price is excellent too, I would be on it.

German Impala SS when they have the big engine. But the 4.5 is no slouch, either.
These are the last of the "bulletproof benzes" built by ex-nazi-era workers.
I may sound bad, but those guys really took pride in the cars they put together, and built them like tanks.
I would love to have one of those older MB's. When you start tearing it apart, you will just be amazed at the way it is put together. Look at the details, of the way it was assembled. They are truly amazing...
I would get it, just for the fact that they aren't on every street corner any longer.

Thats what I was looking to buy before I bought my Z...a grand is pretty cheap for one of those cars...I looked for about 6 months EVERYWHERE for a decent one that was under 3 grand...they are neat cars....Mercedes' like Tony mentioned, especially the older ones are really neat cars...I would like to have a 240D too..
