While we're on the subject, has anyone ever gotten a ticket for not having sidemarker lights?
A:
I don't think they're required ... lots of cars don't have them at all.
A:
I do believe they are (technically) required. I haven't heard of anyone getting ticketed, but I could see it happening because of some d!ck cop just piling things on top of a ticket when you do get caught doing something illegal.
I love Zs with the side markers, emblems, and drip rails shaved. I know there's a few Zs on Hybridz that have had it done.

I dont have any. And like he said, some cars dont have them at all. I doubt a cop would even notice if you did not have any. You would have to be quite knowlegeable about cars to notice that specific model didnt have those small lights on the side.

federal mandate says cars after 68 must have either side markers or incorperated wrap around lights front and rear. It's law, just no idea if it is inforced. Kinda like front license plates... gotta have them to be legal. Personally I don't think one would get nailed for missing side markers though.
Bama try to find some pics of the Tokyo Q45 powerd twin turbo 240Z that is painted Nissan daytona blue from the 350Z. It been widened in the rear and shaved the markers right off. It sweet lookin for sure! It was on Zparts.com, but has since disappered. Maybe if Eric is lurking around here still he will dig them back up and post... I can never get a hold of him.

Ah, that explains it then. Didn't realize the wrap around lights were a substitute.

Get rid of them! I did and love it. They are required but they are not noticed if they aren't there. Check my Z at www.paulbrewyet.com to see the no side marker look. Paul

Or, if you're into body work, why not graft on a different set? For instance, those from a late 60's Firebird would look great as they're almost flush with the fenderline.
I think the objection is that the side markers look like they're just stuck on so if you can find a set that can be integrated with the body line, you'd be different and have no worries about legality.

I know for a fact that not all cars had lights on the side sense 68'. Some just had reflectors, not lights. You could probably find a car or two that didnt have them. I saw someone who made flush mounts that made lettering "280Z" light up. I thought that was neat. If you put on fog lights, and have your front end lit up like a football feild, I doubt that safety will be an issue. But if everyone shaves their lights. Cops may crack down. They do serve a purpose.
A:
I didn't spell it out word for word, but yes they are supose to be the way I said. I do know some most 68 didn't and some 69s had rear reflectors rather than lights. I think it just states that you needed a side marker I wasn't alive when these laws were published, but I do have a Cal Vehicle Code handbook. I doubt I could find that law in there though without some serious reading! You'll have to find the exact letter of the law for yourself I'm not even sure if it is my book or not.
