Z car garage in San Jose, need customer feedback please

General Chat

Q:

I need some serious customer feedback on this place (not hear-say or what you have heard through the grapevine). I need to hear from people that have actually had work done on their Z's, how long it took to do the work (vs estimate on time for work to be done when car dropped off) or how long they actually had your car before they actually started the work on the car and how they were on customer service and contact while they had your car (if you called them did they return the calls promptly etc.?). Any information appreciated.
Thank you
email me to discuss this please instead of posting publicly if need be.

I took my 240z with triple mikunis into Rob about this time last year. Rob and his staff are not only knowledgeable about all of the Zcars, but they are very courteous, and took the time to tell me the extent of all the work they would do to my car. I would recommend the Zcar garage to anyone who owns a Z. I picked my car up on the day they told me it would be done, and was out the door with my reciept! Getting an appointment was probably the most time consuming part of the whole process. Rob explained to me when I got there that that was not uncommon. If you need anymore information, feel free to e-mail me.

Rob usually responded to my emails within a day. Send him another one in case he missed the first one.

Rob had my car for a little over two years (complete restoration). In that amount of time we've become good friends (so I have to admit that I am a bit biased). My car came out better than I could have imagined. He was honest with me up front with what a restoration entails and that it could get expensive in a hurry. He also told me that it takes time. Take a trip to the shop and look around. All of the guys are great and you will not find a more enthusiastic Datsun freak than Rob. Quality work at a fair price. You can e-mail me as well if you have any questions.

Pictures from the ZONC event at Blackhawk. The Go Green 240Z and the blue 240Z at the fountain were completely restored by Z Car Garage. The black roadster has an SR20DET swap that was performed by Z Car Garage. The two 510's and the 350Z at the fountain have also spent time with Rob.

I went there once. The shop is pretty nice and they had a lotta nice cars there. I took it there for them to trouble shot my gas mileage problem.
The guy I talked to talked to me like he didn't care about my problem and like I didn't know anything about Zs. But hey when you roll up in some ghetto ass looking turbo Z I guess that's the way you get treated. They scheduled me to come in like 2 weeks later or somethign because they had a lotta customers or something.

Uhhh... what?
Dude, did you have an appointment before you showed up?
You expect them to drop what they're doing and work on your car without an appointment screwing up the completion of customer cars that had an appointment and most likely a committed delivery date?
The reason it was going to be two weeks before they could get your car in is most likely because they had a bunch of other customer's with 'appointments' between now and then. The simple fact that he has that much business should actually help you decide whether or not the work they do is quality.
If you find a shop with no other cars being worked on where they can take you immediately would be nice, but I'd wonder why they don't have any other work, especially if they're in a niche/specialty car market.
Would you have preferred he lie to you and take your car and then hold on to it for weeks giving you BS reasons why they hadn't done any work on it yet? By the way, that's not a joke, there are shops that will do this rather than possibly turn someone away.
The other option was to take your car, work on it and screw over another customer. Would that have made you happy?
I'm curious why you thought they didn't care about your problem but talked to you like you didn't know anything? Do you have any idea how many different problems can cause bad gas mileage?
I've seen some pretty ghetto Z's roll into that shop when I was there and I've never seen any of the guys blow it off like it wasn't worth it or treat the customer's poorly. I've even seen them try to talk people out of 'fixing-up' or 'restoring' a car that's so far gone it'll cost the customer a mint, that ZCG would be collecting.
How many shops do you know of that try to talk the customer out of paying them...
I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but I suspect you aren't giving us the full story...
P.S.
I have several Z cars worked on there, they do all my track prep and maintenance work and I've had exceptional service since day one and I'm not an easy customer to deal with... zipbeers13 can attest to this...

Thanks for the replies guys (public and emails to me). As suspected I found out what I needed to know.

well that was the impression I got from the guy I talked to. They were moving cars around when i came also and they made me move my car when I tried to park there, how you not gonna let a potential customer not park in your lot. It wasn't even in the way. Then they had me wait like 15 minutes before anyone helped me, then I have to have this guy talk to me like I'm stupid or something. I bet they wouldn't have found the problem anyways, I wound up doing it myself.
And to counter your oh they told this guy we wouldn't work on his car because it'd be too much work for us and we're not good enough. If I had a shop and I could do the job and if the price was right I would do it no matter how jacked up the car was. That just goes back to the they have too many jobs thing anyway. That's just bad business.
Well maybe its just my view on shops in general. I can't trust ANYONE to work on my car ANYONE cuz they always go and screw something up. If you want something done right you gotta do it yourself. You get no satisfaction out of paying someone to work on your car anyway, but I guess if you got the dough that'd be nice. I had this one machine shop work on my eclipse engine. I had em assemble the engine for a lot of money and then they sealed the bedplate wrong and forgot to put an o ring back in. I did tell them to seal the bedplate right but they forgot and they were talking about charging me more and having MORE downtime so I just said #$%^ it and did it myself. If I'd installed the engine like that it woulda leaked oil like a mofo and and the crank would have been destroyed.
Also I'm entitled to my own opinion and I was merely answering 240zcar's thread. And to further answer his question I did not get a call back from them and they didn't call about my appointment and why I ditched their appointment. IT JUST SEEMED TO ME LIKE THEY DIDN'T GIVE A FLYING #$%^ ABOUT ME AND MY GHETTO CAR. If you have a nice car and a lotta money go to z car garage maybe that'll get their attention. On the other hand Scott Performance in Santa Clara seems to have much better customer service. They even held a free dyno day, FREE just drive up and dyno your car. I hear they're pricey but at least they treat their customers well.
SO yes I had a bad experience thanks to you WW and I just told the whole story. Its up to him if he wants to take his car there.
