NZR: tranny

General Chat

Q:

my truck has a 4 speed out of a 59 tow truck..the truck is a 66 3/4 ton
i have an auto i want to put in it. the auto though is in a 70's gmc jimmy 4x4
it is still attached to a transfer case. So what i want to know is where can i get that back casing so i can mount the tranny in my truck?
unless of course 4x4 trannies and 2wd trannies were different and i have to actually buy a 2wd tranny..any help would be apreciated.
also if i cant use this tranny out of the jimmy could someone suggest a good tranny for me? the 350 is an older style it has y type manifolds\
would a 5 speed from an eighties camaro work on it?
thanks guys

The rear tailshaft is different for a 4x4 trans. You may be able to check around at transmission shops as they may have what you need to adapt it for you. Keep in mind you will need to re-locate the rear crossmember that supports the rear trans mount, and you will also need to have a custom driveshaft made to fit the trans and adapt to fit on the old rear diffy.
Best of luck....

Get 2wd tranny as it would be much easier. Save the 4wd one for when you need money. They sell for a pretty penny. I wouldn't recommend a camaro tranny as they're not made to take as much weight as a truck transmission is. Even Jimmy tranny might be a little weak.

I'm kind of fond of the Flashamatic. NK
