Nickel plating...

General Chat

Q:

Anyone on here have any experience with DIY Nickel Plating kits? I took a few screws and bolts from under the hood, and bead blasted them to a nice shine, but now a couple of them that get exposure to the water when it rains have a fine layer of rust on them.
Is there anything else one can do to bare metal to keep it from rusting? I've read that chrome plating is pretty thick, and nickel plating is super thin. TIA

hey there , ive been plating all materials over 15 yrs now so ill tell you what i have seen in the auto industury.............nickel plating is not the way to go on nuts and bolts usally yellow zinc or cad plating is way better , never mind weighs less and you get a less build up on the threads( with threads you have to worry about the pitch diameter). and to boot nickel wont protect like cad or zinc. cad is the best wearing you can get zinc is next best. i hope this helps you out a bit

I use the copy cad kit from caswell plating www.caswellplating.com. Works pretty well once you figure out the formula for surface area. Gettingthe voltage and time right is kind of tricky. Paul

I restored a 55 Sportster. Most of the hardware was parkerized. I was able to reproduce the procces with a cake pan, 30wt non detergent oil and a model train trasformer and about two weeks

I used to bead blast all the time at my job. On rainy days, if I pulled a piece out of the bead blaster and set it to the side, and stray rain splashed on it, no matter how much, I'd have to stick it back in the blaster to get the rust off.
Just spray paint it immediately after blasting (black of course). No bling, but nice and clean.
