General Chat

Q:

Hey 1 fast Z,
Saturday I was at the pick a part on the north side of Broadway rd. before 35th ave. There is a Diesel Maxima their with the Intake and Steel Crank still in it.
Letting you know incase you wanted to get those parts. I know you usually strip all the ones that show up at the yards in town. :o)

Yep, its been there for 2 months now. I got the last 3 diesal maxi motors out of there in the last six months. I also pulled a T5 tranny and P90 today at another yard. Thanks for the note about it. My buddy is pulling that crank tomorrow actually, hes had it planned for about a week. I have 7 diesal motors now, and I think I have enough, haha.

I would love to put a diesel in my spare 240z!
Drop a turbo exhaust manifold on it and I'll have a turbo diesel 240!
How kick ass would that be?!

I know someone who has done the diesel swap into a 280Z. He gets 45 MPG and the performance is not bad, either.

Eh, it wont be as good as you might think, as far as performance. I mean there rated at like 80 HP stock, even boosted people are only getting stock Gas numbers at about 120. So other then fuel conservation, even turbo, you probably wont be pleased with the performance.

HP may not be great, but what about torque?! :)

VW 1.9 liter TDI's are making 250-300lb.ft. of torque and getting 50-52mpg running on petro diesel after bigger nozzles and a chip... They'll get about 55mpg running WVO. That's with the stock VNT15 and stock intercooler.
A new clutch/pp/flywheel to handle the power is required because the stock dual-mass flywheel/clutch combo just isn't good past around 180lb.ft. You can use the VNT17 turbo (and aftermarket FMIC) from the Euro Passat to get 350+lb.ft. but usually people step up the injection pump to the one from the automatic cars to get a little more volume when they do that.
Don't forget to watch your EGT!
You may want to checkout tdiclub.com because they have some good forums for the mechanical diesels. IIRC the 5 cylinder Volvos are making crazy numbers with mechanical injection. They have dyno and timesheets posted for the unbelievers.
Peace!

Found a few vids of fast diesels from the tdiclub site:

Lots of smoke, but hauling behind!
Here's a dyno chart for a fairly modded 1.9 TDI: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=89363&highlight=video

Yea all computer controlled diesals. Old mechanical ones like maxis, wont get those numbers.

The guy who showed up in Syracuse with an LD-Powered Z kicked HEAVY butt at the Auto-X. The grunt of that engine out of the corners made a big difference.
His time, in a basically stock suspension car was VERY close to the top time of the day that day!
Kind of like my "Blue Turd" at MSA. Top time was in the mid-high 50's, and the "Blue Turd" was running 61's. If I had the same slicks on the Turd as the Modded cars did, that difference would be even less.
Performance is more than acceleration or straightline speed.
