My buddy has a 91 RS Camaro. Not the greatest car for sure. The engine is a 3.1L and its done as the block is cracked and warped. So we've been searchign for V8 swap for it.
We found a guy with a IROK Z. He had his motor done at a local shop. A few 100 miles down the road from having said motor built he wrecked the car and pulled the motor. It's sitting in his garage. So he has a complete 5.7L multi point fuel injected motor with everything including ECU, harness, tranny, etc. We pulled a valve cover on the engine and the rockers are new everything related to the valves and springs are new as well. On top of the spring retainers RTV was smeared. I mean the entire spring retainer is covered in orange RTV. It hasn't started to break up yet that I can tell. The guy wants 600bux for everything we need to convert a RS to a IROK.
I'm thinking that we will have to tare the entire engine apart to get all the RTV away from the oil pickup and tare the oil pickup apart and have a large mess on our hands.
BTW said shop doesn't exist anymore...
Anyway its a '89 5.7L with 700R4 tranny. We are debating the price because the RTV could mean shoty work. The engine went through a complete rebuild at this subb par shop.
I say $500 the owner wants $700 my buddy says $600.

it has everything that we need to convert from 3.1 to 5.7 without spending $2K on a donor car. So even if he tares into it and spends some $$ to fix it he'd better off than buying a whole donor car. That is why it is tempting... it just has to be the "right price" you know?
I still haven't figured out why you would put RTV there. It boggles me!

2K where in the hell do you live. You should be able to find a donor very easy for around 500. I mean your friend is going to want to rebuild the thing anyway and it's better then a mess you may or may not have to clean up later.

I was actually angry to see the RTV and told the owner that he should turn them into the BBB and see if there weren't already civil actions against them...
With the exception of a bad motor the RS in hand is in extremely good shape and only has 87K miles... You ask why the motor is blown... because it came with a 2.8L and the PO swapped a higher mileage 3.1L in and over heated the crud out of it.
I mean the headliner is still hanging up there where it is supose to be not torn down or falling off of the foam. It's a really nice car and even with soup in the bottom it's got some balls for a small V6. I really like the torque tube... :: drools :: The paint is flaking a little, but not really bad yet. All in all he got a good deal on the RS. He paid 150 for the car as his truck was stollen and totaled into a tree. He got a pretty clean Camaro RS with a blown motor.
I woulda paid 150 for this car for sure, Even if I was going to put another 3.1 in there. Besides stock vs stock the IROK cars beat the C4's from the factory... We're going to miss that extra frame reinforcement the IROK has, but at least he's got a slick top.
Anyway I am just a little peeved to see the RTV in an engine that someone paid good money to have done "profesionally".

seems they put it in there to keep tapping down so they wouldnt have to worry about adjusting valves or anything lol

that was my guess, maybe to hide unwanted valvetrain noises.
All the donors in CA Bay Area are spendy I guess. Checked Craigslist.com, Autoshoppernetwork.com, and a few local tow yards. Cheapest we found was a green early camaro with a 305ci carb motor for 800... and it was a total peice. We would be way better off with a $500 IROK donor car for sure as long as it was running in a good way LOL...

BUT! but the RTV was the big point as stressed by the initial subject line. Am I the only one that gets angry at other peoples shoty, more over negligent, auto work?
I know I gave more info than needed... I sometimes tend to do that. I just thought I'd take advantage of any advice that might come from it.
IF you INSIST I could put "NZR" in the subject line if that make it better LOL.
You guys must hate Camaros as much or more than 2+2's.. BUAHAHAHA...

stock for stock a gran sport C4 will eat an IROC's lunch, but hell, i'd give him 600 if all of the engine control does in fact still work and you get a good tranny too. buy a gasket set for the engine and tear it down and see what ya find, might just have to scrape a bunch of silicone.

I am actually inpressed that GM would reinforce the body for the 5.7L on a IROC (K).
Ask bubbles all about RTV, he's an expert in that field.
Anyway, personally I would get the engine for as low as you can, tear it down, clean it, spec it and then reassemble it. Your out what, a few dollars for a gasket set at best? Big deal. Either way, if that's including the trans, that's not that bad of a deal.
