Progressive Auto Insurance

General Chat

Q:

Are lying, overpriced, scumbags.
I ordered a policy from them saturday cause I couldn't get in touch with AAA. Their price was more than double AAA's price. So I signed up with AAA on tuesday and cancled my Progressive Policy. They said I would have my refund in 24-48 hours (which is all it should take). Now they are telling me I have to wait to get my money back for 12 days and they won't return it to my account till the 15th.
Those overpriced pricks will never get another dime from me.

Man that sucks. I've got them now and have had great luck with them and low rates and much lower than what I had with Allstate, what was a major ripoff!

You just HAD to have insurance and bought expensive just to get it?

Please re-read the first post.
When you buy a car in michigan from a dealer they require proof of insurance before you can take it off the lot. AAA was closed. I had to get insurance to take the new car home, I had no idea progressive was going to be sooooo far overpriced. Nor that they where gonna be jerks about returning my money. I have friends who use them and thought they were great, my friends are now switching companies too.

Yeah, they suck. Actually I just canceled my policy over at state farm (I don't need a car up at school), definitely before it was due. The sons-of-guns tried to take the money out of my bank account anyway, charging me 50 dollars in overdraft fees at the bank. Idiots. Now they're jerking me around.

Get ready for a short-rate refund. It's the normal business practice to cover the cost of issuing your policy, and let's the company keep some of the expenses when folks sign up to get their registration renewed, or their new cars off the lot, and then cancel.
A:

Looks like your cancel request didn't time well with your payment plan PAC draw from your checking account - there are two different operations involved. And the bank charged you the overdraft fees, not SF.
Only one side of the case is being aired here, folks: cjh's side. There are untold details that led to this situation ...
With your next insurance company, try suspending coverage rather than canceling. And don't do anything at all if you're back and forth regularly and starting and stopping cverage frequently. It's a royal PITA for everyone involved.
A:

Short-rate Refund? You me a pro-rated refund where I only get the money back for the days I wasn't covered (IE they still charge me some money and don't give all of it back)?
I'm 26 not 18 I know how that works and never expected a full refund. I already know the pro-rated amount im supposed to get back and I'm fine with that. I just want the money they owe me.

In every state you have a "free look" period during which time you can cancel your policy and get a refund. Length of time varies with state. The brokest people are always the one to complain that their refund wasn't processed quickly enough & caused them to bounce a check. You'll get all of your money back especially if the AAA policy was effective retro to when you bought the car. (It should have been or you owe Progressive premium for the time they covered you.) Progressive is just making sure that your check was good before sending you their good check. You can't simply compare premiums without similarly comparing contract language. Premiums are based on percieved risk & expected claims. AAA is planning on paying less claims. Perhaps it's because they think you're less of a risk than Progressive or the contract mandates less benefits or their claims department is a bigger pain to deal with & simply pays less. Planing your insurance before buying a car or having more cash than a few dollars make this kind of hassle go away.

proper planning for ins coverage. My company covers any new car I purchase for 30 days. AAA probably has a policy. But you need to plan and have the proper papers for the dealer.

Junkman. Dude. Where to you get off assuming I can't afford to pay my bills.
It's not that I'm gonna run out of money without the refund (I'll leave off the other comments that come to mind), it's the fact that it is my money, and they are dicking me around on returning it. I am not comfortable with anyone other than my bank holding onto my money. I'm not bout to bounce a check, or be lacking for money because of this, but I'm not bout to forget about what is owed me either.
Oh and progressive already has their money from me, I have the bank statements to prove it. So their waiting for it to clear is a load of crap cause it already did.

If you're not comfortable ith them holding your money, you shouldn't be comfortable with them covering your liability. They're not going to return their money until they're sure payment was good. I just went through something similar with State Farm Bank. I bought a truck & State Farm was the lein holder. Check cleared in 1 day, They sent the title 14 days later. It's a matter of their covering their ass. I didn't like it but couldn't get plates or insure the vehicle since I didn't have title.
On another topic, in TN you used to have 30 days where your recently purchased vehicle would automatically be covered. This time is now down to 6 days. Gotta check the current laws everytime you buy a car.

I have Progressive. I've had to do stuff with them over the phone and it is always hassle free and very simple. Their rates were the lowest I could find as well.

Nope, I cancelled a week early because I'm not going to be driving until next May, and they tried to charge my account. Oh well.

Some CLUTZ backed into my L/R quarterpanel in a market parking lot. They had Progressive...They tried to "J" me down and give me some $400 check. They finally agreed to have this Cad dealer do the bodywork and paint. (Martin Cadalac) They did a good job except fpr the GIANT BLACK Pontiac interior panel rivots, ha-ha! I know that was a $1,200 job! They WANTED ME TO CASH THEIR LITTLE $400 check! Norm K
