I just got done speaking with a pal over at PKV Racing (Champ Cars) and was asking him about it and Ferraris and he said that they are so far ahead with their aerodynamics as far as F-1 is concerned that if they stopped their windtunnel testing right now, they would still be 10 years ahead of the competetion! He told me they test 24 hrs. a day non stop.

if you look on the right side of the 2nd picture you can see the pipe the smoke or whatever is coming out of. looks like it's pointed UP to me. point that puppy straight ahead or down and see what happens. i'm sure they have... where are THOSE pictures?

I was going to comment on the pictures also. The smoke is pointed to the hood, or the wind/smoke is. They show no flow under the car, and more importantly, around the front bumper of the car. That was not a valid test for that car.

The smoke is not shooting out of the pipe, it's simply a (specialized) smoke generator to be a visual for these test. The winds velocity if what carries the smoke, so no matter where you 'point' the smoke source it would be the same.
Imagine a lit cigarette in an astray, the smoke will come up from it no matter what position the cigarette may be. I would imagine they're testing to verify that the air flow is laminar flow (smooth) and to see if/where it may become turbulent (choopy flow) and air flow doesn't stay close to the car's body as it should.
