NZR: Opinions on SUV vs. Truck

General Chat

Q:

I need the opinions of my most trusted resource, my fellow Z enthusiasts.
Would I be better off leasing a new XTerra or a Frontier.
I have a bicycle that I will transport, as well as be using it for light off road use from time to time. Who thinks what?
And also, since it will be only light offroad (grass fields mostly), is the 4x4 really necessary?
Thanks.

I have not driven the frontier but I have always loved driving any of the xterra's I have had the chance to get behind the wheel in.

XTerra hands down...
1976 280z 2+2 - Risen from the dead - garaged since 1988. Pallnet Fuel Rail and guage - ES rack and front bushings - 260Z 4Speed - Arizona Z Car Clutch - H4 Lights - Lots more to come...
A:

Both are trucks. All wheel drive is only needed for serious off-roading.
A:

I would say the Frontier because the bed gives you the option of hauling oversized stuff like furniture etc.
Heavily medicated for your protection.
A:

An Xterra will handle nearly the cargo that a Frontier will, and keep it safe and dry to boot. It will also handle more people with style, and grace than the truck, and pull just as much depending on the package you get.
A:

First to clarify...if you go to the Nissan website, Hybrid, they have broken down the classifications into "trucks" (Frontier, Titan) and "SUV/Minivans" (Murano, Xterra, Pathfinder, Quest, Armada)....hence my subject title....
Second.... Some statistics....
Towing capacity
Xterra - 5,000 lbs
Frontier - 6,500 lbs
Interior Passenger Volume
Xterra - 99.8 cu. ft.
Frontier - 87.7 cu. ft. (King cab)
Curb Weight
Xterra - 4,136
Frontier - 4,139
Fuel Economy
Xterra - 17/22
Frontier - 17/21
I'm liking the frontier....the only two draws to the Xterra are the "style and grace" comment and the hauling almost as much crap while keeping it dry...but pickups definitely come out on top for payload capacity and towing capability....who knows...

I like the new Frontiers that look like a baby Titan, but I wouldn't trade my '04 crew cab 4x4 Titan for one! I vote truck, all the way, leave the SUV's for the soccer moms... look at the full size Titan also, 2wd models aren't that pricey, although the frontier certainly gets better mileage.
try throwing your latest greasey junk yard score in the back of an Xterra, yikes...

CantZmee, as you see from the specs, they are damn near identical no matter what the sales people categorize them as. It's just a matter if you want to spend more to call it an SUV or not...
A:

How come the Xterra weighs about the same as the frontier?

Is anyone leasing one right now? How much are your monthly payments?

I like the 6-speed V6(265hp/284ft-lbs, oh yeah) 4-door 4x4 frontiers, I did a used car in spection on one pretty nifty truck. I liked a cutsomers 6-speed, V6, 4-door 4x4 xterra too. I also drove a plain jane 2wd 2-door 5-speed 4-cyl frontier, I liked it as well.
They are pretty much the same on the inside and underneith, basicly the only difference is the front end and the fact one has an open bed while the other is enclosed. So really all it comes down to is if you want an open bed or not.
Also pretty soon they are going to come out with a long bed version of the 4-door frontier.

i think it comes down to whether you want a bed or covered cargo space.
my dad leased an xterra. he wasn't too thrilled with it. before the xterra he had a 4runner and the 4runner blew the xterra out of the water.

I own a 2006 Nismo Crew Cab Fronteir, the VQ40 is a powerful motor! Its a great truck, styling and function, the cab is very very comfortable, and motorweek tested it better than the toyota and the honda trucks, but i dont like you, you might ruin the fronteirs name, so get the xterra

If you can get a deal,go 4WD.You may not need it,but when it comes time to sell, you get more for it.

That's what i was thinking. Right now I am trying to figure out how they mathematically come to their Residual value on a 48 month lease.

Neither. Leasing a vehicle is almost always financial idiocy.

Are you randomly transporting the bike, or are you taking it to various training rides and events? For ease, I cannot beat being able to sling my road bike into and out of the bed of my beater Mazda B2200, with just a single fork mount to contend with.
However, if I am away racing in Arkansas or Texas I wouldn't want to be without my 4runner. Holds all my gear under lock and key, and provides a shady place to sit or change threads between races, etc.

It comes down to you -
what do you think you will do with it the most? Haul things or people.
Pick-up styles are versitles - get a camper to cover the bed or simple bed cover.
If it's more for people then the SUV route and when you need hauling for bulk - rent a trailer.
At one time - a Chevy Suburban was the best thing we needed for camping but there were times I could have used a pick-up.
Got the pick-up now and can "make do" but then we don't haul people or car camp the way we used to.

I got the SUV. Pathfinder, actually. I LOVE it and can't wait for the coming months and years behind the wheel of one of the best SUV's on the road.
I was going to pay for a used and finance it...I just don't have the cash right now. I disagree with Dave's statement on the lease. They don't charge a high rate of interest. In fact, they don't really charge interest at all. You have to view a lease like this. You are paying to RENT the car, and you are paying the dealer for the LOST value they have from not financing it. Sure you can see it as pulling the wool, but think about it this way.
You only pay for what you use. With financing, they own the car but you absorb all the depreciation. The minute you finance a new car, you drive it off the lot, all of the deprecation comes out of your pocket. NOt a big deal if you were planning on keeping the car anyway (like I was), but when you run into a situation like mine, it's a problem. Also, no longer are the days of the "open-ended" lease, where you can get tagged with hidden market depreciation at the end of your lease. Nowadays, when you sign the contract, you know exactly what the car is going to be worth after 39 months, so you know exactly what your paying for. The Pathfinder, for instance, has a residual value in 39 months of approximately 55% (based on my lease). So I am paying to use 45% of the car over 39 months. If the car is worth $20,000, and you are using 45%, then you pay for $9,000. Just amortize that over the term, and there you go....$231 a month. Very straightforward. Then of course, they have to make some money, so the add what is called the money factor. That is the equivalent of the interest rate, and it is built into every piece of equipment/real estate you rent or lease. I had a money factor on my lease of less than .001, which equates to less than 2.4% APR (.001x2400). So my finance component is approximately $29 a month...using my previous example. So, if at closing, I decide to buy the vehicle, NOT only do I know exactly how much I have to pay (i.e. no dealer markups for used vehicles on the lot), but I have the option to pay cash or finance it. Even if I choose to finance it, then I will still probably end up paying less (depending on the terms), than if I have financed from the start. If i could attach an excel spreadsheet I would, but oh well.
Of course, paying cash up front is great if you have the cash to do so. Of course, then you have to measure the risk of the car breaking down and it being out of warranty. In other words, say I pay $6,000 in cash for a used car. After 26 months (again, using previous example), I have paid $6,760 to use (lease) $6,000 in value of a brand new car. If my repair costs on the used car I bought over that time period are zero, then every period after that I am getting better value from buying used only if my repair costs are less than $260 a month.
Ok...I have rambled enough

In other words, with leasing...all you pay for is the depreciation.
