Q:
anybody have any ideas or know of anything that would let me covert the locks and ignition on my '81 ZX to something else that is not so easily compromised?
I will be putting quite a bit of "theft-deterrent" stuff on my cars now.
Alarm, quick-release steering wheel and lock, switches to disable the car, etc.

Sure, don't use locks at all!
Leave all the stock locks in place but use a remote entry on the door and a different starter switch. Leaving the bogus stock ones in place will definately point people in the wrong place that want to open and/or start your car...

Hehe... I like that idea :-D Anybody else?

You could install poppers and shave the locks...

Go to Radio shack or whatever and get a relay for like 2 bucks, splice it into your ignition cleanly as not to make it look like "Hey look at me, Im an odd wire!". Same crap you get with an alarm with out all the fancy noise and signs to show you have an alarm. If your Z is not really built up your mostly going to just get the occasional joy rider that knows these cars are a joke to steal, such as your case, guy prolly just needed a ride somewhere for a few days. Any precaution I guess would help, even simply taking 3 seconds to reach down and pull a fuse out might. Club to wheel maybe, club to brakes is not bad, ...club depressed on the gas pedal would be fun to watch. Funniest crap I would see when I lived in LA was when people would actually use a huge chain connected to the axle or whatever and wrapped around carport pillars, now thats paranoid! Ahhh car theft in LA, I sure dont miss hearing that same old repeating car alarm 90% of cars had, they would go off all day and all night.

Other things to consider: VIN no. etchings and keeping your car garaged so that it’s out of sight and out of mind. Anything you can do to try and slow down a car thief will help. You want him to get frustrated so he’ll go steal someone else’s easier-to-steal car.

Kill switch on 1,2,3?
Anyone can drive a new car.
A:
Wireless remote start the car and cut the starter wire from the ignition. That's still doesn't save your car from a tow truck though.

I would love to have a garage... but most apartment complexes don't have garages...
One I can afford a house... I will have a garage.
Anybody want to buy me a house?

If someone wants to steal your car specifically they are going to more tha likely. However for a joy ride, I think the idea's here are awesome. I would consider some myself if we had a larger problem with car theft.
