early Z's for the dealers

General Chat

Q:

i've heard a few jokes suggesting that in the 70's drug dealers [for some reason in particular] were know for driving Z's.
Have others heard of this stereotype, ...or am i smoking crack.
A:

Probably crack...
I can't see dealers buying tiny cheap Datsuns.
A:

...or maybe it was users.

the story pertains too, the opening in the wheel wells that were used to hide deveil weed, if you pull the plastic inner panel you will find a handy ledge for storing things you would not want found.

the answer lies not within the question but rather within the answer itself!
A:

I don't remember any plastic fender liners in early Z cars...
I think the stories were for Porsche that had "smuggler boxes" built in the front of the car for tools.
A:

I've also heard that [at the time] they were referred to as "disco-rails" becuase they were often seen in the club parking lots.
...for the record, i never saw the seventies, so this is all heresay. just some food for discussion.

The 77/78 280Z's interior rear deck, just aft of the front seats, has a large space under it that does not have any access. The earlier Z's had 2 doors to this space. Because there is no direct access, this is a perfect location for smuggling stuff. I wonder why the doors were eliminated? I found it when I had some tools go missing from the spare tire area.

I heard it was because the early ZX's were the cheapest car you could buy that would outrun the 5-oh

That's weird, cause my '77 had the doors missing... somebody had made the spaces into speaker boxes. They covered the holes where the dorrs are supposed to be with wood... I always wondered why they took the doors off... I figured that the speakers made the doors rattle so they replaced them with wood.
I also pulled the doors I am gonna put on there off of a '77.

Early Zs did have plastic fender lines, over time they usually get removied or damaged, here is a pic of them on Joels car
See them above the tires there?
A:

Oh I see them. It was real hard to look away form the engine...very nice.

I have a friend who owns a body shop and he has found some crazy **** inside some of the cars he's worked on. My favorite was a red Porsche 911 turbo he bought at a police auction that was impounded from a drug bust. He found a hidden compartment with a MAC 10mm submachine gun still inside it.
