Q:

so this is my old high school teachers SCCA car... Not anywhere close to finished, but very cool. Technically if you can spot it, it is a 280Z converted to compete in the 2.4L class as a 240Z...
Note the modified Clifford header, and I especially like the roll cage.

Why use a 300 lb heavier 280 car to compete in a 240 class?
Lots of Z cars, 1970's-1983's.

I asked him and he says his car should weigh in at 2300 or so when completed... I can beleive that as most of the heavy 280Z stuff is gone... No 280 bumpers, heat/ac, interior, etc... Everything on the car is just about the same as a 240Z... It shouldn't be to much heavier than a real 240Z.
Besides the cars have to weigh at least X amount to compete anyway...
don't hold me to 2300 I just know they have to be in a certain weight criteria to enter and his car is no exception... For some reason I just can't remeber if he said 2200 or 2300... 100lb difference

Very cool!
What are those headers coated with?

From what I hear "the 280 is a little more rigid than the 240".
Just hearsay, but maybe.

I would say that if the chassis is of the same design on the 280 and 240, but the frame rails are extended and the steel is of thicker gauge on the 280, it should be stiffer.
A:

it has the storage compartment doors for a 240. Not sure if the earlier 280z ever had them?

Actually, the Fairlady Z had 240 style compartments till the end of the run (same as the non-USA 260Z's...)
If it was a 75 or early 76 before the plywood covering the back of the compartment, they do have the compartments behind the seats.
And a lot of torsional reinforcement. Take a look at a late 260Z for the US market: all the stiffening of the 280Z, unlike the skinny bumper earlier cars, which are basically a 73 240Z with a different dash, tail lights, and shocks for the bumpers...
('d take an early 260 over a late 240 (73) ANY DAY! Better electrics and more replacement parts available.
And they're cheaper to boot!

Header coating: I don't know, didn't anything fancy.
280 vs 240...
The frame rails are not any thicker metal. The rails are a bit wider if that is what you mean. Not much but they are. 1975+ had rails that extended farther back than earlier models. I don't remember if they actually go back to the rear frame section. The radiator support is a little heavier as well from 1974+, as the bottom was lower'd for a larger radiator. The tool compartment doors are correct for 280z as well as 240z. Early pre77 280Z doors are also heavier than 240Z doors. 77+ doors are slightlier heavy than pre 77 280Z doors. There is also a lot of little things that were added to the body of the car for other options used or not. It honestly doesn't add up to be much more weight for what it all does.

I know that 76 models had them because my last Z was a 3/76 production and they were there.

They changed when the gas tank was changed... in late 77 as far as I can tell from JY cars.
