Q:
I will attept to slowly open the can of worms
289CI or 302ci or what ever Ford derivitive??
1.WHY?? really why Ford?
2.What did it come in?
3.Must be rare? >only one I have ever seen.
4.Whats the designation? L, KA, CA, RB, etc... FU302?
I don't have pics yet, but I picked up a bunch of stuff Sun. There is a "guy" in town that builds Z cars up for a living. He emtied his aircraft hanger out of excess parts. Filled 2 large trash bins. I got some of the stuff 2nd hand. I have yet to find this "guy" everyone talks about..lol Everything is STD parts from stock Z cars, but a MN47 head with a cam that has stamped on back of it " STREET -- TURBO --" ??? No A or B or E or F or etc... " STREET -- TURBO --" Anyone ever seen this and knows where it comes from?
It has E30 casting on it so I would think it is safe to assume it was at one point an original Nissan cam. If anything has been done to it, I can't tell. I just caught note of the weird stamping.
Anyway if nothing else enjoy the bastard pictured above.. hehehe

V8 used in older Nissan President.
Probably a Y44.
Bob Sharp used them for racing purposes in the '70's.
A:
Dang, H4lights is fast. I've seen refence to that engine on here and hybrid.
A:
Is it related to the Ford look a like at all? I think it would be a 289 for early 70's. I'm going to search Y44 on google.

check out how similar the water pump/timing cover is. And what about the dissy placement? Not to mention the reversable head design just like Ford. even the shape of the valve cover is similar, just fastens down differently.

Ask Ghostkilla about his, he got one some time ago and it's mouldering in some long project.
I might be interested in that engine if things go south on F?PS Entry at Bonneville. That engine is a legal swap to the S130 Chassis if I use a coupe, and it's not the typical "C" engine that everyone uses (350 SBC) that would let me run against the "E" engines, not such a big jump, and something All-Nissan.
Ford? Bite your tongue!

Tongue bit.. ouch! Aaahhh, Releif!!!
That's a cool side note Tony... 4L into a 280ZX. Bet it makes a fair amount of torque unlike a Ford...

Will you sell it?
Does it even turn over?
I am seriously interested in that engine, and have been since I first saw a Nissan President back in 1985, sitting on it's side in Mizugama's Junkyard...
If nothing else, it would make a neat V8 Conversion that would be "Period Correct" for a "Resto-Conversion" of an older Z-Car.
I will be travelling up to Fairfield Tuesday as planned, and will be in Madera working the rest of the week. Maybe take a look on next Friday...
Should I bring Cash? LOL

didn't mean to get your hopes up Tony... I have 3gigs of misc pics on my computer. I ran across these while I was cleaning house. I know it sold for $100 on ebay with the autobox attached...
I was just curious as to what monstrocity it had come from and if it was truely a Nissan. I almost thought it had come from some weird factory scarab Z.

What kind of potential? I'd imagine you'd have to have most any performance parts made. But that would be very cool to have in a 240.
Matt
A:
Isn't that the same engine that was in the Newman 280ZXT's that owned IMSA for a few years?
I remember reading about those cars. Lot's of power but they had terrible trouble with heat and durability.
Its the pedal on the right, use it or move over.
A:
As cool as this 2 valve Nissan V8 was 25 years ago there are much better Nissan V8's now. VH41, VH45, VK45, and VK56. VH45's can be found for dirt cheap too.

Yeah but as Tony points out this engine is a legal swap for the ZX for certain racing organizations. The new nissan V8's are not.
Plus it's cool cus its old school yo!

The Y44 only made 200 hp. It would of been neat to put in a Z in 1972 but today it is about as dated as the flathead when comparred to what's available from Nissan now or even 15 years ago.

Our competition for points champion at El Mirage was a FLATHEAD FORD powered PINTO, running a Hilborn-Injection Blown, on Alcohol and Nitromethane... (figure it out: new doesn't necessarily mean you will be competitive, or even in the running for anything! Points champion is points champion...)
The V8 from the President, when turbocharged is easily capable of over 1000HP, as Neuman's car was running 1200hp in race trim.
I think 1200 HP is good enough for me. What are the VH's doing today? Most N/A HP I have seen is 700 in the 5.6L Titan Engine, but it's open deck die-cast block....
Give me cast iron closed deck any day! Especially on my budget.
And like DMS mentioned, the President V8, previously having been a sanctioned engine in an S130, specifically, makes my running one legal, and makes getting it approved for competition FAR easier than any of the "geewhiz" engines currently running out there.

I can't speak for the new 5.6L or 4.1L engine, but I do know the early 4.5L Q engines had major problems with rod knock... I have been looking for Q45 for sale that doesn't have an issue and I can't find one... A lot of these new Renault influenced engines are having rod or rod bearing issues...

I'm sure you know air flow makes power. You can only do so much with a given port design, If in stock form one engine produces a claimed 200 HP (remembmer Nissan didn't use SAE back in the day so this is probably less) and another of nearly the same displacement (VH45) produces a claimed 280hp with VVT (Nissan also had a 280HP SAE limit back then, with out VVT it still made a claimed 280 hp so many believe it to be closer to 300 hp). The 280 hp engine obviously has a better port design and will flow air more making more power. Same as an L28 vs RB26.
The Turbo V8 280ZX IMSA car wasn't very successfull. Maybe it made 1000hp, 1200 at the end of it's fuse, but so did the single cam VG30 turbo and later twin cam. It had pretty good success, dominated for a while in GTP and GTO and weighed less.
Yes I'm sure a flathead engine can make power. There are other plenty of other dated antiquated motors making power too. Harley Davison for one. But they are also given a huge displacement advantage when running against 4 valve Japanese bikes to do it. Air flow again. What they are doing power wise? I don't know. What can they do is another question. I don't have one in a car yet to tell you first hand. I do know 6 years ago there weren't to many 3 liter 2JZ Supras making over 600 rwhp. Now there are quite a few over 1000 rwhp. Alot with 800 rwhp on stock internals and head. So just because people haven't begun to realize the potential of the newer Nissan V8's doesn't mean they don't have great HP potential. If it works for your class that's great news for you. I just don't see it being even a decent or ecconomical swap into a Z in this era.
Also the VH41/45 and atleast the VK45 are closed deck, not open.

Ya, they might get rod knock after a while as most engines. Most have over 150k, some 200k miles on them. 7M's have rod knock issues too but it's an oil level issue.

Most of the cars have less than 150K on them.... Compared to pre Renault influenced engines there is a big difference. I don't consider a Nissan with 250K miles or less "high mileage".... Hell even some of Nissan's little bastard motors will hit that mark before major mechanical problems will occur. You know the ones I speak of... I make pretty good friends with all the parts guys in the dealerships. They are all giving me the same story about these new line of engines and just parts in general have gone WAY down hill... I've seen MANY of these engine straight up fail with a rod or even 2 rods end up flying out of the engine compartment with very little mods. You might actually find some info on this at Altimas.net
