Q:

i found a 72 510 nearby for 500 bucks, i know the tranny from a z car will fit , but does anybody know if the engine from a z will fit. also what are things to look for ie. rust spots? im going to look at it this weekend. thanks

With enough money/time/fab skills you can make anything 'fit' but is it wise do try to get a Z engine in a 510...well no, at least not the straight 6, but a VG30 can be placed into the 510's engine bay no problem.

no a z-car engine will not fit without seriousl modifications. But the thing only weighs like 2000 lbs and you don't need a big six in it. There are all kinds of other swaps that you can do of more modern engines, or just other L-series. The L16 can even be made to be pretty peppy. They are cool cars and if that car is relatively rust free, then it would be worth it. Very similar to z-cars really.

You have to watch out for rust in the fenders corners both front and rear. Open the trunk, take anything that they may have in there all out so you have a clear view of the corners all over the trunk...if there's no rust there, you're good. Do the same for the front, open the hood look for rust. Inside lift up any kind of carpets they may have and look for rust on the floors. You can simply pull up on the rear seat bottom cushion and it should lift right up so you can inspect underneath that too for rust.
As far as engine/tranny...just get a KA24 swapped in and rid yourself of the hassle of having to 'tune' your carbs every so often...plus I get to walk up to in the mornings, turn the key, starts right up and goes like hell...without having to pull any choke cables and letting the L series motor 'warm up' like I do in my little workhorse Datsun 521 truck!
Here's some pics of mine with the work that's been done (6 pt roll cage, custom hood air inlet scoupe, Watanbe wheels, etc)
The only thing I have to do to it now is get rid of those stock seats and install my spare set of 350Z seats...then decide on what color to paint it! I'm considering either white or blue like that blue on the new Z's color...decisions decisions!

I once installed an L20a in a 510.
If I were doing it today I'd put in a VG30.
A much easier installation.

The VG swap is far easier than the L6, looks factory, and makes the VG perform like it should. Plenty of Donors out there, looking for a classy chassis to house them, clamoring to be saved from the mire of mediocrity...
