IMHO, the best looking mini-trucks ever built were the '72-'78 (I think those are correct years) Datsun 620 trucks. In fact, happening on one of those 20-some years ago is what got me started on the whole Datsun/Z disease. They combined a classic look (the front double headlights somehow reminscent of early Detroit iron, the classic 'flare' of the sheer line over the door totally unique) with ultra simplicity and the bulletproof L-4 motors. (These basically ARE Z motors with two less cylinders, even the front covers and timing chain stuff fits). Chronologically, motor development paralleled the Z: L16 in the '72-'73 models, L18 in the '74 and the L20B in the '75-78s. These are basically the same engines that the 510 guys tune to stratospheric performance, so of course the same is possible with the trucks. Depending on where you live, the older ones would not need to be smogged, either.
The drawbacks: if you're much over 6 feet tall, forget it. You won't fit. And they ride like trucks. Very stiff. I used to carry 5 or 6 bricks in the back all the time, just to take the edge off. LOL

1980 280zx with a mildly ported N47 maxima head, 60mm TB, -C- stamp 256 degree camshaft, and a 2.5inch mandrel bent exhaust. yeah, its quick, and yeah, its a 2+2. NOW with MSandS_E power!

Defintaly the 620 pickup. I had a 1979 model myself a couple years back and loved it. I only wished it was the extend cab. But they use Z trannies so that's a plus and it's an L-series engine so their simple as can be. I put a sway bar on mine in the front and it actually handled rather well and mine had the optional 4.37 rear end in it so that might be something else to look for.
