Q:
Stan,
Thanks for posting the diagrams.
What battery is the 13 pounder? And where can I find one?
I will weigh the stock battery, it IS fairly small. Looks like a large motorcycle battery..
A:
Think someone either dug up the specs or weight the stock battery around 24lbs. There a thread around here somewhere he had a around 13lb as a replacement.
A:
These are excellent...use the SAE adapter posts and make your own mount...
Hawker

They are light, are dry cell so they can be mounted any way you want, they can be deep discharged without harm, recharge quickly due to the low resistance and can start our cars without issue. I've used the PC680..that one is strong enough to easily start 3.2 liter NSX motors. For the Elise you can look at smaller/lighter options as the cubic inches are smaller hence the starting load is lower. The 680/545/535 look pretty good for this car. The deep discharge capability is nice for fun cars that may sit off season since regular batteries never recover from such treatment should it occur.
A:
I ordered the PC-680(13lb) battery and hope to have it in the car for my Sears Point driving event on monday.
The titanium harness bar arrived on saturday(@ Shinoo). Unreal welds, unbelievably light and equally expensive, but WAY cool
I also relieved the car of the windshield washer container which is quite heavy when full.
On sunday I was installing the harness bar and belts when I noticed the (2)Q-pads(sound deadening=very heavy) that are under the floor mats and (1)stuck to the rear firewall, they are now gone. I will remove the (2)Q-pads that are under the seats this week. Easily removed when the car is new and on a warm day. Or you can warm them with a hot wet cloth and remove them with a steady pull.
Can anyone verify if the Sport only version has these 1/8" thick approx 12"X12" sound pads in all five locations. I believe them to be installed on Touring cars only..
BMC was great with the 1,000mi svc @ $259.00. I was in and out in about two hours. They told me that the cars come from the factory with fully synthetic oil and that they will be using fully synthetic on all services(great!). They also quoted me $2,400 to remove the A/C completley(a little pricey but I may end up letting them do it) Maybe we can put together a tech day and watch the tech pull the A/C......
A:
Dave,
Pretty sure the cars come with dino oil not synthetic, the manual says this and I seem to recall this being mentioned at the LOG Lotus tech session. And as you know the approx 4 liters in the oil coolers are not drained first service so this would mean it's semisynthetic after the first service.

this is the case. If you're nice to your service guy maybe you can get him to fill with synthetic, run the car for a minute, then change again with synthetic. This should get you pretty close to full synthetic.

At the LCU Tech Session lead by Dave Simkin, he stated the "break-in" oil is mineral based and at the 1k service it is replaced with full synth (although he made it clear the oil coolers are not drained, thus in reality you end up with a blend of mineral & synth).

I have this battery in my Spyder and it works great. No starting problems ever and I have a fairly high powered sound system in the car. I weighed it at 11.5 pounds with the terminal posts. I got it brand new off ebay for $53 IIRC. One of the Spyderchat members fabricated a custom mount for the PC 545 battery that bolts in place of the stock battery mount. I may try and adapt this mount to the Elise... if I ever get it.
A:
What battery group is the Elise battery?

******What battery group is the Elise battery? ******
It's a 26R-6YR. 550 amps, 80 minutes reserve. Delco 19001598
----- 29.5 Lbs ----- (per AC Delco)
So there is a solid 15-20 pound weight savings available to those who can consider such a mod.
By the way...26R was the Lotus designation for the racing version of the Elan. Our Elise is designated 111R.

Extreme measures for extreme times.
Was the pump motor part of the washer tank, or separate? That thing must be an onerous beast of weight, with magnets, wires..
(2)Q-pads(sound deadening=very heavy) that are under the floor mats and (1)stuck to the rear firewall, they are now gone.
Any measurement of the weight there? Just curious.
You should have a gram scale in your garage by now..
A:
Speaking of grams... Look at the overflow hose near the black coolant tank cap with the yelow markings. It must be what 1 1/2 inches long? Or maybe 2? I chuckled when I first noticed it. Heck you could leave it off. And notice around the rim of the water canal around the engine bay - only small pieces of rubber to help the lid sit nicely and that's it.
BTW A is the mass air flow sensor while B is the controller for the flap at the bottom of our airbox. Since this PIC I got rid of that ugly black tape you can see on the RHS and I covered the wires with the same 1/4 inches convoluted tubing Toyota uses. On their cars, the taped wires are covered by larger dress up plates.

Is there a downside to these lightweight batteries? If they cost around 50 bucks and save 15-20 lbs, that is a lot of bang for the buck! Steve

Downsides include:
* Must use SAE adapters as they come with threaded inserts for the terminals.
* Must make mount as they are so much smaller than stock - not hard to do.
* Low reserve capacity compared to stock. Don't leave stuff on...and the battery will go flat faster when the car sits. No harm done to the battery though as they can tolerate deep discharge without issue and recharge rapidly due to the low electrical resistance. If memory serves the reserve time might be about 1/4 of stock.
* Not available on every street corner.
* Ideally they prefer an extra bit of charge voltage compared to conventional. Something like another couple tenths. But this is not a deal breaker.
A:
As I said, I've had no problems with the PC545 on my Spyder. Even on very cold mornings, the car cranks right up. You just have to be sure not to leave your radio, lights, etc on without the car cranked or the battery will go dead quick. The battery plus shipping and the terminals cost me no more than $70.
Do a search for PC545 on ebay. There are tons of them for sale there. I believe this is the guy I bought mine from: Odyssey PC545
Here are some pictures of the custom mount made for the Spyder. Not sure if it could be modified to work on the Elise as I'm not familiar with how it is mounted. There is also a horizontal mounted version not shown.

A:
Perry, with all this work you are doing trying to eliminate any excess weight in the car, how about the driver losing 10 or 20 pounds. That might help as well.
Cheers
A:
I plan to keep eating well so the car MUST continue to loose weight!
I too noticed the little "L" shaped piece of hose on the coolant tank but was not so excited about the possibility of having a short burst of coolant envelope the engine bay!! I added a 2-1/2"
long piece of rubber hose that vents to the ground through one of the NACA ducts mounted to the belly pan....
I must modify, must modify, must mod...........
A:
The washer fluid reservoir does have the pump attached to it..

Heck you could leave it off. Without the hose/elbow, any coolant spraying out of the overflow would be directed directly at the ECU...
I'll leave my hose/elbow on. Maybe extend it down...

I am glad to hear that you got a Ti harness bar. I love mine! How about 6lbs Carbon top?
