Driver Mirror

Interior Exterior

Q:
I picked up my '06 today and I immediately noticed that the driver side mirror is funky. The passenger side is typical convex, objects are closer, type mirror. The driver side gives a funky image. It reminds me somewhat of the multivex mirror shown in another post, but it's not as dramatic. Reminds me of a euro mirror. Gives double vision if I stare at it, and seems to cover more space than I'd expect.
I haven't done the experiment with a nice grid behind it. Has anyone else noticed such a thing, or am I smoking too much crack?

I will also note that the dealer spent some time fiddling with the interior light and the alarm. I think he was referring to an electrical glitch in the '05s between the light and the immobilizer or some such. Whatever the problem was, it's fixed in '06.

A:
The interior light wasn't a "problem" in the '05, you just have to understand how it works and have it in the correct position. Haven't heard that it has changed on the '06. The whole alarm, fob, door locks, etc. are "interesting". Do study (really study) those things in the owners manual and play with it some on your car. Better now than at 4 am some morning.

Well, it was a problem in the sense that your interior light position should not have any effect on your alarm. Since opening the doors is what makes the light go on (in the down position), putting the light in another position effectively broke that circuit and made the alarm think a door was open. They fixed the problem in the later '05s. I can put my alarm on with no problems with the light in any position.

Yeah, I put "problem" in quotes because it is a problem to some people, but wasn't a manufacturing defect like many of the other problems discussed here. Lotus often uses one piece to perform two, or more, functions...often with confusing results. I wasn't aware, though, that its operation had been changed during the '05 model run.

Tyger,
What month was your car built? or more specifically do you know when they made the change? I have one built in June and had not hear about this change either. I will have to check this out on mine.

Has Lotus issued a TSB for this? It's not functioning properly and should be fixed.

Mine was built in Feb '05. I bought it in April '05. Have you had a problem with the alarm with your interior light in the up position?
I'd call it more a "fix" than a change. It may be that some of the earlier cars were not wired quite properly and that they figured it out later in the run.

No problem, I just had not heard about the change. Thanks for the info.
