Q:
spoke to gt factory, they said they could make a kit for the lotus if someone supplied a car. the price would be around 2k for the new light weight hinge kit and 1k for installation.
A:
...so what happened to the kit that appears on the car in the picture? It appears its already been made. I think they just want an excuse to drive someone's lotus for a week. haha.
A:
this guy is selling the lambo door hinges for 400 buck give or take 10 depending on the car model, I sent them an email asking about hinges for the lotus.

I'd still laugh at anyone who installed those doors. I'd rank them right up there with the silliness of spinner wheels.
A:
As far as silly goes. Look at the picture above where the one guy can get out easily and the other guy is still going to have a hard time after chipping the edge of his door and leaving a mark on the car next to him. If by "silly" you meant "totally sweet" then I guess I understand.

lol
I'm with sweetness on this one... they're hellasweet those doors are. When most people think "exotic car" they think of those doors. lambo doors to spinning rims = lame comparison I can see you thinking that if you are the type that does not like flash in any way, beauty cars or attracting attention to yourself though. And, here comes the obvious question... if you really are one of those people then why did you buy an elise?
I'll be laughing too.... every time I open those doors to slide in and out of my LOTUS!

About a month ago I visited GT Factory and let them have a close look at my Elise. I wrote up a contact report in another thread. The standard hinges they sell would add 45 to 50 pounds to the car (after deducting the weight of the current hinges). However, since the Elise doors are much lighter than the worst case door the current hinges were designed for, a smaller, lighter hinge is possible, but would require some new development on their part. Hence the higher cost. However, I would guess that if a few people were really interested and did a group buy, you could split the development cost. The standard hinges are available on-line for about $1000. I would guess that the light weight hinges would cost about the same if made in the same production volume after the development cost is paid for. Also, I would guess that a group buy with install could lower the installation cost a bit because the group would be sharing the installation learning curve cost.
GT Factory estimated that the lighter hinge set would add about 15 pounds or so to the car, maybe as high as 20. You could offset that with the weight savings from a dry-cell battery.

I have been taking quite a bashing about getting vertical doors for quite some time and I'm glad to see so many of you at least opening up the idea. I had a feeling there were more people out there that liked the idea but felt that they would be laughed at as suggested by others. I also knew the Elise community was more open and tolerant then that :-)
This mod ia not about being a lambo but more of a easier way of getting in and out of the car as well as saving the doors from damage. Yeah, and it looks cool too. I think a group buy would be a great idea. I am in, anyone else?
PS
KMS what can you do to get the kit you picture of the doors over here?
A:
I like the splitter and spoiler - really like how it covers the front wheels instead of tapering in. I don't get the spoiler though - wouldn't that require changing the whole front clam? Isn't it all one piece? What am I missing?
I would buy those doors right now if they were available.

I noticed the same thing about the front clam. This is not just a spoiler/splitter add on. You have to change the front clam. No way is that gonna be worth it for most.
MORE INFO ON THE DOORS KMS! Where are you?
A:
What is all this love about the center console?? What are you even talking about? Looks to me you are looking at the other sides door ledge and not something thats in the middle of the car. LOL
A:
I think the splitter/spoiler is bolt on. You can see the vertical seam right under the headlights and a horizontal seam next to them. I like how the spoiler covers more of the front tire. Seems as if it would create a ton of down force on the front (I don't know anything about aerodynamics so I'm kind of talking out of my ***). Would a rear diffuser be enough to even out the car?
A:
I will be in Japan and I am visiting their shop next week. I believe this door hinge is a different set up from the rest since they are saying it as their own design. I will find out all the specs. I am still interested in their Spoiler and Splitter as well.

I didn't think I would like the look of the Lambo doors on the Liz, but now that I see them I have to admit they look pretty good. It is a well know fact that Lotus toyed with the idea of Lambo style door when designing the Liz.
Lambo door IMO tend to look silly on cars that have square doors. They look like a tacky afterthought. But the Elise doors are shapelier, so it works much better.
In the end I while I do think they look good, I don't think they look any better than the standard doors. Plus I find often when aftermarket parts are added to cars it can create problem, so personally I will pass on the doors.
One think that I'm not clear on... How do you close those doors once you sitting down? I don't see any handles?

For $1000 they should come with a little guy who runs around and closes them for you.....
A:
heres a guy that is selling universal kits....

The TMR doors are made from their own design. I contacted them and they will let me know about available dates and so on. Their spoiler and splitter is an add on parts. You do not need to change the front clam.
A:
Thanks KMS - hope you bring these parts over...
A:
Aside from the bling factor why would anyone buy the splitter without the rear spoiler?
I think that alone it would severely upset the balance of the car over 80mph.
