new small mirror option

Interior Exterior

Q:
I found a cheaper solution to the small mirror from Shinoo(sorry Shinoo).r.d.enterprises has a small black plastic mirror with a day/night switch that is about seven inches wide, and half as high.this mirror works the same as the big mirror, mounts with a sticky mount to the windshield, and best of all cost about $50 delivered.www.rdent.com
I called this morning. They're sold out, but expecting more in a few weeks.
A:
Well... perhaps Peck555 can post a picture of his mirror so we can figure out what we are dealing with!

I just had a look at my Sector 111 micro mirror and the Lotus mirror.
The Lotus OEM mirror is 10" x 2.75" for a total surface area of about 27.5"
Based on your description the mirror you mention is 7" x 3.5" for SA of 24.5"
That is not that much of a difference and because it is taller than the Lotus mirror it will make the blind spot larger in the vertical.
The Sector 111 micro mirror is 4" x 2" for a SA of 8" but it is an oval shape so the total SA will be less than 8"
To recap total approximate surface area of these mirrors is as follows:
Lotus OEM = 27.5”
Rdent = 24.5”
Sector111 = less than 8”
So the micro mirror is at least 3 times smaller than the mirror you are suggesting. I don't think that the $50 mirror solves the problem.
mounts with a sticky mount to the windshield
Does it not use the OEM Lotus mount on the windscreen? If that is the case this product sounds like just another mirror from JC Whitney and it is not small enough to deliver any tangible benefit from a width standpoint and it is taller than the OEM so it makes the problem worse in the vertical. Add the "sticky mount" to the equation and I don't see how this product is an improvement from the Lotus OEM mirror

I'm guessing that Peck555's mirror is NOT 3.5 inches tall. His post implies that, but I suspect that was a rough (and probably erroneous) estimate. A mirror that tall is kind of hard to conceive. Hopefully, we'll get a more precise measurement.
BTW, here's another option: a 6 inch oval. Not sure what the mount is -- there are a couple of choices.

Hello Neil,
All we have to go on is Peck555's post so I took him at post value
Even if his estimate is off by a bit and the Rdent mirror is the same height as the Lotus OEM mirror the SA is still about 20" or more than 2.5x the size of the Sector111 mirror.
The other mirror you mention is still much larger than the sector mirror, not that much cheaper and the mounts are not compatible with the Lotus mount.

Oh Patrick, I'm so very disappointed with your estimations. Now, keep in mind that I have yet to order the Sector111 mirror, so I'm using your post as my base data.
If memory serves me correctly (most likely a bad assumption) surface area of an ellipse (not that the 111 mirror is an ellipse, but -meh-) can be reasonably approximated by:
SA = (pie) * (w*h)/4.
   = (pie) * (4*2)/4
   = (pie) * 2
   = 6.28 sq in
.: QED

Which is about 23% the surface area of the stock mirror.
Just my nerdy 2¢ for the good of the math. I'm sure someone will flame the bejesus out of me for some grammatical / spelling / mathmatical error contained herewith.

Hello CJ,
Thanks for the fancy maths
I was rounding up I knew it would be less but that is substantial
You could probably tell me how much damage a Saturn SUV can do rolling back into an Elise

And then I was humbled. I'm going to go sit in the corner and reflect on what I've done.
Aside: my favorite part of that experience was your synopsis:
"$8,000 for the front or $10,000 for the rear. Or both!"
Good times Pattie'o.

Patrick Yep. I posted that cause one person complained in a post somewhere that the Sector 111 was just a bit too small, so the 6 inch would probably be more to that person's liking. (But I only saw one person say that -- everyone else seems happy with the Sector 111.)
A:
That the mirror in the Elise disturbs a tall driver when cornering has been complained by many Elise owners since the first Elise appeared in 1996.
I do not understand why something like this has not been corrected since long by Lotus themselves.
If that would be a Japanese company I am sure such low cost item would have been improved in no time.

My guess is FMVSS regulations.

Hello CJ,
No need to sit in the corner, we are all just having fun here and you did buy me breakfast
That SUV rolling back towards your Elise at 4AM was funny when it was over
BTW IIRC I said $15K for the rear

Not in Europe in 1996...

Hey CJL... something to keep in mind next time another vehicle is trying to run you over... some genius came up with this amazing invention called THE HORN!!! The HORN buttons are conveniently located on THE STEERING WHEEL of your car! Pushing on the airbag with do you absolutely no good try the buttons.
See below... if you still have a hard time finding them... Well, I suggest walking especially in LA!

Thank you Neil, as always your insight proves invaluable.
For the record, I think the horn buttons are placed in a bad area that is easy to hit on accident, and difficult to find in an instant. I like to punch something big (like the center of the wheel or the other driver) when something bad is about to happen.
And I'm sure this will get me even more flames.

That's some funny ****!!! Blame the steering wheel... Try driving with both hands on the wheel instead of Detroit slouching
Or maybe driving something like this...

Or maybe driving something like this... Wow, that wheel is tight! Where can I get one with matching 22's for my Elise?
