Q:
Guys here is the new gas tank protector that we have designed for the Elise.
This will save your paint from those nasty gas station handles. It has saved the paint on my elise.
Made from the same 3M Scotchgard paint protection film used on the factory Lotus clear bra. Designed to fit on the painted section under the gas tank door. Will protect painted area from gas pump handles.

A:
Why not just hold onto the handle while you are pumping gas? The paint on my Elise hasn't suffered (there) in ~6000 miles.
A:
One good reason would be for those who live in that lovely state called New Jersey. They won't let you pump your own gas. I've cought more than one attendant resting the gas handle against the car. I try to avoid getting gas in New Jersey but it is unavoidable some times.

And for those of us on Oregon where we are not bright enough to pump our own gas. According to our fire marshal, cars are exploding all over the country from people not following proper safety procedures.
I get out of the car and ask if I can pump my own gas. With the Elise it has been 1 in 10 who will let me pump the gas, with the Elan it is 5 in 10, with the Seven no one wants to pump the gas.
A:
I always fill the tank by holding the nozzle sideways or at an angle. That way it never contacts the fender.

I buy gas in Jersey all the time (it's a lot cheaper!). No problems so far.
A:
$25 bucks is pretty pricey for that small piece of 3M. I bought a 1' square piece of film from these guys for $5.50...cut it myself in less than a couple of minutes - worked perfect.

Yeah, it fits fine.
Protects from drips and the pump handle.

New product idea:
Know what I really want?!?.. Some way to protect the aluminum center "spine" down by the gas pedal. My foot rubs it all the time, and I'm sure eventually it's going to look sketchy. Maybe a piece of this film might do the trick?
Cheers-
Johnny

How about $5.99 for this gas bib? http://www.autoxpressions.com/gasbib.html
I have one for my Miata and the Elise...fits perfectly for both.
...and I don't let anyone pump gas for me, New Jersey or not
A:
So the AutoExpressions gas bib just arrived (took over five weeks to arrive).
I wouldn't say it fits the Elise.. it falls short of protecting the bodywork most likely to get chipped by the gas pump. It's just too short.
If I did spill gas from the nozzle, it would flow down the bib and onto... the clamshell. So no win there either.
The Griott's one pictured above looks longer, so it might actually cover the lip of the car, and not just the nozzle area.

Should we use 3M to cover the driver?
