How to Paint Your Center Console and Engine Covers

Interior Exterior

Q:
Have any of you who have painted your console noted unsightly scratches and blemishes? I did and actually repainted my console a few weeks ago. I decided to go with a textured black finish. However, I purchased some clear 3M urethane tape and put it on the console where all of my scratches and dings seemed to occur (near the seat belt). The stuff looks great, is slippery so dirt wipes off and costs less than 4 dollars a linear foot for 3 inch wide tape. I am sure that I can find other uses for this as protector against surface abrasions. I think that leftover starshield or other paint film would work as well.

I left my console with a textured finish. As opposed to an auto body mirror finish. It's still perfect in appearance after about a year and > 20K miles.

I was concerned with two areas on the console. The first one was between the driver's side lap belt buckle and console. When I installed my racing harness it pushed the buckle towards the console making them touch. If I were to move my seat back and forth the finished would rub off. I solved this by tucking away the harnness lap belt so that it would push the buckle out. No scratches so far.
The second area is where my leg rests while I'm driving. My right leg rests against the front part of the center console. No scratches or dulling there either. All is good.

Stan,
How did you get the door sills to fit? I have them and when I stick them down
and close the door you can still see them where the door curves in.
I tried moving the around, but it did not help.

I dropped the center console, air cond surround, and back part where the Cig Lighter is off at the auto body shop today.
Should have it back by Friday - I can't wait to post up the results!!!!
I haven't seen a British Racing Green one painted yet.
I'm driving around my poor car all striped & in pieces. The air conditioner unit is even hanging down by the wires.

Answer: They don't fit! I have em shoved inwards under the rubber seal and forwards so that they are invisible with the door closed. They need to be redesigned.
