Q:
[b]If this is a relatively painless proposition, the $$ to be saved are substantial.
Any shared experiences would be appreciated?
Adhesion over Starshield ?
Sticker City product vs others?
Thanks

adhesion over starshield won't be a problem. When you are shopping you get what you pay for, get a cheaper price and probably get a cheaper vinyl. Don't get a calandared banner vinyl because the price is cheap- the quality will be too, installation will not go as easy, and they will crack down the road. Get a cast vinyl, outdoor life rated from 8-10 years and they will be just as durable as paint, plus easier to repair or remove. I prefer german oracal cast vinyl over Avery, but that's just me. It's kind of funny, but the better quality films are actually thinner and much more able to conform to countours. Even though they are thinner, the pigment is more concentrated due to the manufacturing method. Use the right tools (a gold or felt vinyl squeegee) and good application fluid and installation is relitively painless.

Just ask whoever you are shopping with what kind of vinyl they use. Anyone knowledgeable will be straight forward with you. There is a huge difference in our cost of vinyl so a lot of people don't really stock the more expensive stuff since most consumers just want "cheap". I don't really deal with the cheap stuff too much unless I'm doing yard signs or banners. I just do vinyl on the side, but I've been doing it for a lot of years, If you want to tell me very specifically what you want, width and length of bulk striping, color, etc, I can round you up a price. Or I'm sure sticker city carries good film as well. If you don't use a cast film you aren't going to do a DIY job and make it work. A pro can get away with it, but a novice is going to need the conformity of the good stuff. And more important that the film or who you get it from is clean clean clean!

I agree with everything SweetDaddyD just said. I put the stripes on my car last week- two 8" front to back. It was pretty difficult, but I used the wrong material from my sign shop. The hardest part is the back where the curves are pretty drastic. The good thing is you have a crack just below the rear of the trunk to start and stop the tape so you can straighten and start again. The rear deck also has a pretty drastic curve that requires some working to get the vinyl to stretch. You also have to take the lettering off the back. I bought a new set from the dealer for $21 to put back after the job was finished.
In the end, I had a couple of minor wrinkles and some bubbles that I probably would not have had if I had used the right product. Mute point, since my wife hates the stripes, and I took them off. Take your time. It took me about 5+ hours.
