Los Angeles Mesh install?

Interior Exterior

Q:
I'd really like to do a mesh engine cover, etc. fabrication and install. If anyone in the area wants to join me and do their car(s) at the same time, maybe it would go smoother. I'm looking at this link for direction/inspiration.

I think it makes it look like every other civic out there with Gi-normous overstylized body kits and huge bolt on wings and scoops. They sell it at the local discount autoparts store in colors, right next to the lighted windshield wiper nozzles. But that's just my opinion- which doesn't mean anything and wasn't asked for.

u basically answered your own question

When you see my new grills just keep that hammer and key to yourself.

Is there any noticeable weight savings with the mesh, or is it solely for aesthetics?

They are probably heavier than the plastic if you choose to use anything other than a flat mesh. But we're talking ounces here.

I guess you don't like the look of the Exige?
It appears better constructed than the cheap plastic grill that comes stock. I'm just waiting to catch a rock on my front grill. I will have to stop and pick up the dozen pieces I left on the highway :-)
A:
The only question is why they use that cheap plastic crap for the elise when the exige gets nice mesh pieces? I bet nobody here can answer that...

Just came from a home depot run. They sell the stuff in large sections, unfortunately, only in silver (which may not look too bad on some cars). It's extremely lightweight, I'd imagine even lighter than the plastic.

I'm dying to do mine. Left the front grills off just to egg me on to do it sooner. I've just not been able to find a mesh I like. I like the front grills on R package Jaguars the best, but think the mesh on the Z06 might work as well.
Alan, let me know when you want to do this.

Do you happen to have the Home Depot part number?
A:
Nice stuff here but expensive. Used the hexagon XXL powdercoated.

Great! Seems like there's a lot of L.A. interest. Let's talk on Sunday and figure out a time.

I don't, but I'll try to roll by later and get it. Is powder coating expensive?

Hi guys,
The aluminium mesh I used is in fact lighter than the plastic slats, although as has been said above you're talking ounces, so very little difference overall. The reason the Exige has the mesh as standard is due to the fact that the Exige clamshells are hand laid, the mesh is bonded to the inside of the clamshell before fitting it to the car, a process that takes alot of time.
I thought Lotus might have picked up on the popularity of these and produced a kit but it seems not to be the case.
Once again many thanks to Michael for hosting the pics info etc.
Its good to hear most seem to like it.
Regards
Jon
