Well, actually, I did manage to free it up finally.
I pulled up to a red light and felt a need to stretch my right leg. I fit my foot between the accelerator and brake pedal and extended it until it was resting comfortably on the firewall.
The light turned green, I tried to withdraw my foot and found that it was stuck! The loop of my shoelace had gotten wrapped around the accelerator pedal. I couldn't reach down to untangle it, so I just yanked my foot and pulled the shoelace loop out -- good thing I don't double-knot the shoelaces on my driving shoes.
Slightly embarrassing...
