Should The Passenger Need a Belt?

Interior Exterior

Q:
Allright folks, I'm about to dive into getting the 4Tress Harness bar, along with a harness for myself.
The question is, I see a ton of people get them for the passenger seat. Why?!? I'm assuming that you will likely be alone when on the tracks? I don't see the need to spend additional money for it.
The only other time I see myself carrying a passanger is on the streets, in which case, my speed levels and cornering actions reach no where close to that on the tracks.
Are there any of you who chose to get the passenger side for whatever reason, or didn't so for a reason?
A:
Sounds like a personal decision. If you're not taking a passenger on the track ever, why get another racing belt?
A:
As far as I know, if you plan on having an instructor ride along a lot of tracks require that you both have the same safety devices on the seats... those pesky lads and lasses seem to want to be safe just like you. I could be wrong about this though, since I've never been to the track... just been doing research.
A:
I always use harnesses on both but I do take passangers. I give them a harness as much for me as them. Once you have a passanger without a harness flailing around while your braking and cornering you'll thank yourself when they get strapped in with harness. Many less arms and legs getting in your way in the car.

That might be why they are riding in the car in the first place...
A:
On numerous occasion I've had passangers get in my way while shifting in other cars and those cars had "oh ****" handles. I've ridden passanger in an elise and there is much less to hold on to. I though giving them a harness is doing them and yourself a favor.

+1 - as well as many clubs that run drivers schools require you to have the same level on both sides
A:
I just completed my second of two track HPDEs. The track required that I be certified by an instructor prior to moving up from the touring group. The safety equipment for the passenger must match that available to the driver.
A:
I recently installed the 4tress bar and Schroth driver side harness. Reason for only one side is that I'm the only one in the car on the track, sorry no passengers also my girlfriends doesn't like the harnesses getting in the way when we're crusin. She prefers the stock seat belts cause it gives room to move around easy in the car (Not that theres alot of area to move around ).
A:
As other have posted here - in EVERY DE and lapping day I've been in, the passenger (instructor) safety equipment must be equal to that of the driver's. I've seen the Porche club take this to extremes - i.e. if the driver seat is a racing seat with full bolster support, the passenger seat must be as well (meaning you can't leave the stock OEM seat in the passenger location).

many clubs require tech inspection for both seats to have equal restraints... if i was an passanger - i would expect equal restaints.
A:
From a moral and legal side...
If you intend on ever taking passengers you should probably outfit them equal to yourself. If you were to ever wreck and injure the occupants you will end up in a sticky legal mess because you considered $200 less valuable than your passengers health or life. I am sure that your passenger's relatives wont appreciate that. You also may not be able to forgive for what you did to your passenger.
Of course, we all take and assume risks when driving on the track. I would personally feel better if my passengers had proper restraints.
If you dont take any passengers......well it doesnt matter what belts you have.

100% agree

I outfit both seats with the Scroth 4pt ASM units. First, I'm not yet solo qualified in the HPDE school I attend. Second, even if I reach a point that they'll let me drive without an instructer, I may occasionally want to take a passenger. And third, it just looks cool!

Yeah, another reason I'll be getting the passenger side, next year though. oh yeah, and to protect my passenger too
A:
Keep in mind, you could be the passenger in your own car as well when an instructor is driving you around the course. It's not just for your passenger but for yourself as well.
I would feel pretty badly if someone was hurt in my passenger seat because I didn't spend the extra cash to give them the same safety system I desired for myself
A:
an instructor is driving you around the course.
No offense to the instructors out there but I just can't hand over my keys, at least not the Elise keys.
A:
Most organizers require equal restraints if there's going to be an instructor or passenger in your car. If you're ever going to have a passenger, you'll definitely want them - it makes a huge difference for the passenger on track.

Or, if you're ever going to be a passenger, you'll appreciate not being flung around the cabin during flight.
That said, I only have harnesses on the driver's side. Why? I wanted to see if I liked them first before I bought two. So, that's another option (not in the poll) that you might think about.... I didn't figure that Scroth was going to go out of business while I decided.
