FRANKENmirror: it lives!!!

Interior Exterior

Q:
Here it is, Some of you may know i have been threatening to build my own mini mirror with day/night....
basically i choppen up the stock mirror and hacked out the mount and ball socket. then got a slim cheapie mirror from the parts store and chopped that up and cut the glass to size and shape, then re-fabbed the trim ring with a propane torch, pliers, burnt fingers, epoxy, and vise clamps from 4 pieces, then i coppen out the center section with the day/night block, and epoxied that on, then chopped up the ends and epoxied those on. - that gave me the basic form. (you can see the proportions in relation to the stock mirror back) then it was easy to just form and smooth with sanding and bondo - oh, i also cut out the rear of the day/night block in order to fit the lotus/GM socket (it has to move free to day/night).
i sized it up to fit "high and tight" and the width is perfect, just catches the edges of the 2 headrest... all in all - i would never spend the time to do it again- but it came out great!!! and just in time for halloween - BbbbbbbzzzZZZZZ it LIVES!!!!
A:

Oh that's all? Sounds simple enough...

Frankenmirror looks great! I was kind of hoping, with a name like that, it would have two big bolts sticking out the sides.
Tom
A:
haha - considering the bolts for a halloween costume, can rear view mirrors HAVE halloween costumes???
A:
This mirror is perfect! But there is no way I would be able to duplicate it. You should market it. Easily worth $100-$150.
A:
As much as I hate to say I just installed my "Autozone" mirror today and I love it! Just can't believe I had to go to Autozone to buy a mirror for a Lotus.
It was very easy and what a difference. I can actually see the road now. But I do wish it was a little smaller. Your Frankenmirror looks perfect.
A:
Very nice!

Nice job!!! You've inspired me...I've had a plan to modify my existing mirror also. I'm planning to shorten the ends and cut it in half horizontally. I don't need the day/night feature as my rear window is tinted very dark...and with the mirror on 'night', I can't see anything out the back.
Thanks!!!

with no day/night - it will be very easy for you to do! for the day night.. it gets a little complicated.
tonight driving home.. it was awesome! SUV's be damned!

You have got to be the most patient guy in the world! I can't believe everything you went through to make this mirror. I can only imagine the cost to make this mirror after you added up all your time. The good thing is you will never see another one in someone elses car! My hat is off to you for all your effort and I hope you enjoy that mirror for a long time.

I am so jealous of the amount of free time that you must have.

well it took about 3 months of 15-60 mins here and there... a few 2 hours sessions over the weekends. so really the sacrifice was not that bad spread all over, but yeah - as a lump sum - eekk!!!
