Q:
I think the box is a great idea and wished someone would market it properly - a lockable compartment is what the car really needs - especially when you leave it with the roof off - it would save having to take everything out and put it in the boot.

I'm not sure if you can buy that in the US, but trust me, just be patient, and within a couple months of the first US Elises' arrival, there will be several storage box options available...and even more as time goes by.

I drive my Miata as my daily driver. When I park it top up or down, I leave the doors unlocked. Nothing of value is ever kept in the cockpit. The "lockable" glove box is never locked, and I usually only keep a hair brush, some paper napkins, and maybe a "burned copy" of a CD (if it's stolen, I still have the original at home). Anything valuable is always kept locked in the trunk, along with the registration, etc.
It really isn't a problem. It's just the way things are, and you will adapt quickly. And it's probably a lot easier than getting down on your hands and knees to access a lock box in the passenger footwell...

Any updates on storage boxes?
Also, I am assuming the passenger footwell footrest can be removed totally if your passenger is 6'?

Working on it.
As for the footrest, I still found it usefull and I'm 6'. I certainly wouldn't want a storage box down there, there's not much room for the passenger to begin with.

The problem with that Tim is that the trunk release in the center console is extremely easy to get to (with the console locked or not). I worry about where to put my handgun when I'm out in my Miata and I have to leave it in the car. I've actually considered unhooking that release, but I find it really convenient...

The remote trunk release on a Miata is very easy to disable at the trunk lock side, and it's totally reversable too.

Yep. I just like having it there. I don't drive the Miata very often and very rarely do I have to leave anything in the trunk, so I don't worry about it. But if you are extremely worried about security that is a big week point.

The box is a good idea but when are you going to have a gun rack for the back window. Make mine in aluminum Shinoo.

One of the first things I did to my Miata - disconnected the trunk release from the console. I've never missed it.

Err...arriving in fall 2003?
My idea for one fell apart when I removed the dash cover on the passenger side. There just isn't the space back there that I expected. I AM surprised that no one else has come out with one though. I got busy with work, had to put this idea on the back burner for now. It's ranked #3 on my list of stuff to design for the Elise...

Hello larry,
thanks for your reply.
What I'm trying to do is to make use, either of the shelf in front of the passenger, or the fiberglass shelf behind the passenger's seat.
I do not want to invite someone walking by to "remove" items that can be seen, or even try to.
And getting and removing items at the back of the passenger's feet "area" would be inconvenient...though possible.
best,
Robert
