WOW, I thought I was picky.

The video shows how the media/tv hype everything to a ridiculous degree. From what I saw the guy was doing a high quality but pretty standard detail. I guess you could pay 5k for it but why?

Anyone know an easy way to remove wax that gathers on the ridge between the starshield and the paint?

I like washing cars, have ever since I was a kid. I don't go quite this far with my cars, but each of my cars gets most of this treatment each time I detail them. The basic wash isn't so detailed, but the times they get waxed I get close. It's only a few hours of work, 5K, that's nuts. Did I miss it or did he polish the windows too? No detail is complete if the windows didn't get polished.
I got my wife's car so shiney the last time I did this she asked me to not polish it so much next time.

We use a soft bristle tooth brush and lightly go over the joint. Then wipe down with a micro-fiber cloth. For a small financial consideration I would be happy to teach the technique :-)

The Autopia forums were all over this several months ago and they mostly weren't impressed . They did agree however that he is excellent at marketing and pulling in high-end customers.
The guy's PR rep showed up in the forums a few weeks ago to defend him. Apparently the TV spot is not representative of the real procedure because the real thing is way too boring. The car had already been fully detailed before the shoot, so he didn't have to deploy all of the extra buckets, guards, etc that Autopia was faulting him for missing. He also only does 1 or 2 of those special 5K jobs per year. His normal rate is around 75/hour and most jobs end up in the 300-600 range.
The film was done maybe a year ago. The fancy Zymol wax is now available from many more detailers, and the cost is sort of a one-shot thing because Zymol provides free yearly refills.

FWIW, I wouldn't call that "standard" detailing. I've never seen that citrus degreaser before. Also I've never seen anyone dry a car with microfiber towels or apply wax with their hands. While I've read that these are important in reducing scratches, they also make the job really time consuming.
Also, I think they only showed his "standard" service. There was mention at the end of a 66-stage detailing that he does. That's probably the 5k pound service. BTW, his prices also probably reflect the super-expensive products he uses.

A friend tells a story of a tank convoy on an Army base that he observed. Some officer decided that he didn't want to wait for the convoy to pass, so he pulled his car (I think a Mercedes of some sort; this was probably in Germany) into the middle of the convoy. Apparently this is something you are NOT supposed to do, and to show their disapproval the guys in the tank in front of him revved their engine.
Their very large turbine engine.
He says you could see the paint bubbling right off the hood.

Way to much contact with the paint when washing/ drying! I would never let this as@$#*le clean my cars. He did a number of things wrong. Cars of this nature should have a controlled wash. You don't let water run into the body lines of the car. You don't use the same towel to do the underside and the rest of the body. The car should be blown dry with compressed air. The swirls he took out, are the same ones he put in! I could save these rich morons alot $ and they would get a better job. Ridiculous!

You've never seen me detail my cars then I guess.

I hear he now has a super exclusive detailing procedure where he flies young tahitian beauties in to wax the car with their breasts. Apparently his caloused hands just don't do the same job.
A:
No, THIS is the ultimate car wash

That Maserati looked really nice when he was done - man, that is some car...
