Painted Gear Shifter Question

Interior Exterior

Q:
I just painted my gear shifter with red letters and a black strip like many people, but now I am wondering what it would look like with yellow letters to match my car. I went with red initially since I thought the yellow wouldn't stand out all that well, but I'm 2nd guessing myself. Does anybody have a picture of their gear shifter painted yellow or at least another color besides red?
A:
I did green numbers, red R and yellow stripe. Tried to stay close to the badge colors. Looks great IMO.

Thanks for the link Randy. I think I will try the yellow when I get my tube of touch up paint. I might leave the "R" in read, still haven't decided on that. I couldn't find any Testor's clear coat, so once I am settled on the color, I might experiment with some clear fingernail polish instead to seal everything in and to help "fill in" the grooves. This will hopefully help minimize the crud that builds up in the grooves from your hands.
You might also want to consider cleaning the grooves as best you can with a q-tip and mineral spirits before you paint it. My car has a little of 5000 miles on it and I turned a couple of q-tips black with crap from the grooves before I painted it. I then just used a small paint brush, dabbed it on and wiped off the excess with a paper towel with a little bit of mineral spirits on it. Worked like a champ. Use just a little bit on the rag, don't soak it, as the rag will suck the paint right out of the grooves and you have do it again. DOOH! !

I painted mine with green numbers and a yellow line like the lotus logo and it looks hot, to me. I am sure that you could repaint about 5 times before there is no more room so you may as well try it.

Here is the original thread with lots of color variations and also color codes:

OK so I'm a dork and followed suit on this one. a color combo I havn't seen yet, white numbers with black line and R. I was in the mood to do it tonight so home depot was the only place open so I grabbed their rustoleum touch up bottles of gloss white and gloss black. I found a stash I still had of tons of testors model paint but no white or black left, go figure. I think I might add another coat or two of the white later. Here are pics with and without a fill flash.(Was not easy to photograph with my 28-300 3.5-6.3 non macro lens.I need to get some more lenses)

Hey all. I'm new here but wanted to throw out my idea. I just did this mod to my new CO Elise. Black line and R, with orange numbers. But I made one change... after a couple coats of the colors I also added something else. I bought another enamal type paint to go ver the colors... a clear coat of Glow in the Dark paint. Works awesome! My colors are still just as bright, but gives the numbers a soft glow at night. Barely noticeable, but very cool I think.

proud,
That might not be a bad idea to use the glow in the dark painton the hash mark for the heater/ a/c control knobs as well.

I'll have to try a pic at night. It really is barely noticeable. I think I could put a couple more coats of it in there without it dulling the orange and black, but not sure.
