Argh... hole-drilling!?! (despite the weight-reduction... )
I knew it was too good to be true, sigh...
On a tangent, for those of you who like to play around w/ a dremel and other small tools for small DIY jobs, you'll be amazed at how many original things you can fabricate for your car using common & easily obtainable materials (PVC, lexane/plexi-glass, aluminum/steel, lathe mesh, rubber/metal piping, etc'...). A small jig, vise, handheld rotary tool w/ various accessories, and some creativity is all you need!
Ex. Mesh-inserts w/ gaskets, custom engine cover, radar-detector bracket & stealth-box, GPS-Nav. mount/pod, iPod cradle, cel' phone holder, subwoofer box, amp-brackets, speaker plates, brake-ducts, cup-holders, and other mini-projects!

I'm pretty sure he only drilled a hole in the cupholder, not the car.

Yup, no hole drilling. Just use the screw/mount for the console. How does the carpet cupholder stay in place?

The carpet cupholder works very well. I have one in the Elise and one in a Mini Cooper. Doesn't move, works great.
A:
what is the carpet cup holder?
The one we from autozone? with the hole and the screw?
A:
I'll stop by autozone in the morning. BTW, nicely painted console. Did you do it yourself?
MY local body shop did it for me FREE!
I love those guys!

I loved the cup holder attached to the center console idea so I thought I'd buy one from eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=63691) and try it out myself. Well, this cup holder has 6 pre-drilled holes of which I only used the center bottom hole. By using this hole, the cupholder does NOT sit flush on the floor, rather, it's about 1" from the floor.
I didn't want to scratch the paint so I cut a piece of self-stick, black felt and attached to the bottom part of the holder and a piece of 3M heavy duty double sided "poster squares" on the top portion so the cup holder won't twirl around as it's secured by only 1 screw.
Also, the part that holds the cup in place is adjustable. I don't anticipate that not having the bottom of the cup holder flush against the floor will be a problem since I won't be buying any heavy or bulky "big gulps" ...it's all about the weight

Just so I'm clear, using the tape, why couldn't/didn't you allow the bottom to lay flush on the floorboard? This is one of the better solutions I've seen so far...nice idea.

Agreed, it seems like you could have put a small vertical slot in the cupholder that would allow for it to be placed flush with the floorboard.
Great find.
Actually for folks with touring carpet, I bet you could stick just the hook portion of velcro all over the back of this and attach it to the sill carpet... would help camoflage it a bit better.

I was anxious to try out the cup holder with the pre-drilled holes. I'll probably cut a vertical channel and "slide" it into the proper position so it does sit flush with the floorboard....for now it works just fine.

Have any of you guys tried the cupholder from sector 111. Its completely removable and the cup just sits on the side sill. no screwing or drilling, take it on or off, so no weight penalty when tracking plus you can get an extra one for the passenger. Just slide it under passenger seat when not using. I love mine and what's wrong with cupholders? Sometimes we're just commuting.

I feel like a marathon runner in my Elise without a cupholder. Get out at gas stop, chug a drink, jump back in car and resume. I was getting all dehydrated just driving the car home after I picked it up.
Do you think the Brits all wear those "beer hats" when they drive?

ChrisN and JLElise. Thank you both. Looks great, functional and cheap...
