Interior Mods - Almost Done

Interior Exterior

Q:
I'm almost finished with interior mods....a second SPA gauge went in today. "Boost" and intake temp. The boost portion reads only vacume now. Maybe emommy will get a supercharger for me over the holidays

Nice looking wheel! I'd love to have the horn where it should be! Thought about the guages myself, just not sure what to put in there!

I was wondering if you drive this on the street w/o an airbag? Have you a harness instead?
I know some people don't like airbags and don't know why really.
Nice gauges. Is intake temp an issue?
THX

THX Yes and I've thought about a harness but when touring the Lotus factory this summer I was struck by the fact that most of their cars are made without airbag - safe for everyone in the world except the over-regulated USA. I of course wear a belt an absolute 100% of the time.
I didn't like the bag for four reasons: it's ugly, it blocked the gauges, it brought the wheel too close to me, and it's heavy
I had to do a small fab for the intake air temp thermocouple. It's pictured in the second shot. I feel I need to shield the wires with something. Anyone have ideas on what could cover them, i.e. add without taking back apart again?

Split loom. It black and plastic.
PM your address and I'll send you some.

Love it love it love it!
How difficult was the steering wheel install and what have you done about the airbag warning light? I am contemplating a partial cage (front roll hoop tied into the existing rear, no door bars, knee bar or petty bar) and the removable steering wheel would be a boon to ingress / egress.
I'd like to do an oil press / temp SPA gauge.
Frank--

Or black spiral wrap....and I could send you some of that.

Frank-- Frank, Removing the old wheel and most of installing the new one was easy. Finding an adapter that fits the Fed Elise is the tough part - there are threads on "adapter". Keeping the light off was easy once folks on the forum figured out that 2 ohm is the right level of resistor. It simply bridges the wires that connect to the stock wheel.
Oil pressure / oil temp was the first gauge I installed. There are threads on the ins and outs of where and how to mount the sensors too...

What are those two buttons on the shifter console?
A:
What are those two buttons on the shifter console? One each to control the gauges. They're "programmable" for things like cycle time, sensitivity, warning light thresholds, external warnings (buzzers) etc. Also, peak levels are held and recalled via the buttons. Pretty cool.

A quick picture of the gauges while cruzing at roughly 60 through Sonoma this afternoon.

What kind of steering wheel is that?
A:
What kind of steering wheel is that? Momo Team. Roughly $175. The adapter and keeping the airbag light off are the harder parts of the conversion - though now that several people have made the change, it should be straightforward for future modders
A:
I really like that steering wheel, I think I will get one. I have a question; will it work with this quick release from ForcedFed? :

http://www.forcedfed.com/elise/quickrelease/tekniq.html Not sure. I would guess that the wheel side will fit fine (momo patterns are fairly standard, I believe). The question would be mounting to the Lotus FED (they're different...) splined plate (4 bolts).
Also, the Forcedfed site notes that this is not a street quick-release. If it were me, I would go with the solution offered by elise-shop.com and discussed some

i just did a search and can't find anything. is there a thread somewhere about the adapter and airbag light?

A 2 ohm resistor keeps the light off. I simply bridged the plugs of wheel connector with one.

Nice steering wheel! how hard was the install on the steering wheel?

Neil Thanks Neil

Removing the old wheel was straight forward. Putting a resistor in place to keep the air bag light off was easy - once I understood it should be 2 ohm. Mounting the wheel without snap-off and a llittle further away than the stock wheel (my preference) would have also gone quickly except the four holes on the side that mounts to the existing splined piece were not spaced correctly. It took some "machining" to correct.

Anyone looking to buy (or develop ) an adapter should make sure it works for the FED cars - there is a difference.

PS the adapter totals 23MM and I believe this is the perfect width to position the wheel in a more "arms out" style without fingures hitting the turn signal and wiper.

Good input. We are developing a hub and quick release kit as we speak. Ours is going to be plug and play. I didn't want our clients messing about with the machining bit. Ours will also include the airbag "trick" (2 ohm) built in and easy horn button
PS: what size is that steering wheel? 320 mm?
Thanks
Neil
