Q:
In California, the law requires that a handgun transported in a vehicle must be unloaded and stored in a locked container (putting it in the trunk counts, putting it in the glove compartment or utility compartment is not acceptable). Rifles and such do not need to be locked up, but do need to be unloaded during transport.
These rules apply to the average resident and visitors. I imagine that there are different provisions for law enforcement types.
Obviously, there still are criminals in this state driving around with loaded weapons. But hopefully they are a minority.
I think you'll find if you read the law that persons with concealed carry permits are allowed to carry their loaded weapons inside their vehicles.

Bracket is made from 2"x1/8" aluminum. Bends with a vice and large hammer.
At the mounting point, the front corner is ground to clear part of the floor and the back has a notch to clear the side of the seat rail.
11/32" hole on bottom for seat bolt and identical hole on top to allow hex key access to bolt. In the original picture you can see why this hole is necessary.
Holster is a fobus paddle with the paddle removed (riveted) and rivet hole section trimmed with a hacksaw and then polished.
Right in the middle of the holster were two holes designed for alternate mounting options fobus offers this holster in. As these holes were designed for rivets with minimal head clearance, I ground down the heads of two screws until their rivet-like height guaranteed no contact with the pistol. The screws run out through matching holes in the large plate part of the bracket and are secured with a couple nuts on the other side (loctite). Screws ground down even with the nuts and the whole thing painted.
Plate covered with a 1/8" piece of neoprene to make sure the bracket and/or hardware wouldn't rub the console.
It's all remarkably stable and the fobus holsters exhibit superb weapon retention.
This is for a Kimber Ultra Carry compact 1911.

Very nice. Thanks for the images. I may try my hand at that.

The reaction this mild conversation has received is a clear sign of how people FREAK OUT over this topic. In today's world it would mean that you would be contacted by the police shortly after a 911 call had been placed to report someone 'has a gun'.
Many years ago, in California, this happened to a friend.
He had been skeet shooting, and on his way back, he stopped at the drive through window at a McDonalds. He was in his pickup truck. He had his unloaded shotgun on the gun rack on the rear window. He did nothing but order the combo meal. The person at the order window freaked and had the manager call the cops.
By the time my friend got to the pickup window, a police car had blocked the exit, another was behind him, and another was beside him (in case he wanted to drive over the curb to escape). They all jumped out of their patrol cars, guns drawn. They yanked him out of his truck and had him at gun point on the ground. It took a while to get that straightened out.

Ok, VA police/troopers are a bit intimidating (to say the leasts!)... especially those around NorVA(Dulles-TollRoad area...
Residing in TX, I need to take advantage of the laws & mind-set of the people here, many rights to protect oneself & property.
What has kept myself from carrying a concealed weapon in the past was younger cousins, neices, nephews frequenting my residence. Also, I've heard that if there is a routine traffic stop (ie. expired inspection, speeding, etc), and you inform the officer that you have a concealed, registered firearm w/ a permit, often the stopover becomes escalated; meaning back-up comes, more scrutiny, questioning, and overall stop lasts much-much longer. . . (not to mention post 9/11 and non-WASP profiles)
Oh yea... pics!?!

While longer (they like to run the serial of the weapon), I find that the officer is nicer and more lenient in regards to the traffic offense because they appreciate dealing with a polite, responsible citizen.

Understood - one of the reasons I haven't posted a "so, how do you carry in your Lotus?" thread.
Well, I guess they can get over it.

I think it's the hats the troopers wear! Most of them are actually very nice guys.
At home, I have a quick access safe and any other firearms are locked up tight by a combination safe.
You are correct, there is possbility for additional time during a stop. The best thing IMHO is to have your permit out at the same time you hand over your license, registration, POI, etc... Immediatly declare if you are carrying a weapon and where it is. Ask the officer if they would like to see the weapon and if so, how would they like you to produce the weapon.

Every time I've been stopped they've always asked me to step out of the vehicle and stand by the front while they retrieve the weapon. I can't imagine them asking you to hand it to them, but I've heard of crazier things.

Out of curiosity, what do you do when get out of your car in a public place? Take the pistol with you when you run in to get a sandwich from the Deli? I guess it's ok if you have the top on...

I usually have a belt holster on and take it with me. Otherwise I drop it in the boot, even when I'm running with the soft top (still too easy to see in).

Oh, I agree.. I certainly don't expect them to ask me to hand it to them. If that was the response, I think I would rather tell them that I feel more comfortable with them retrieving it while I stand on the other side of the vehicle.

You NEVER leave a pistol unattended in a car, especially in view. Besides the obvious permit problems you face if it gets stolen, would you leave five or six hundred dollar bills in plain view in your car??

Two things:
As to the Map - Ohio now issues CCW.
I carry my Kolar 12 guage to the skeet/clays range all the time in a soft case jammed between the passenger door and seat.
tThere is no way to wear a holster with these seats - at least with my butt.. I think holding a 1911 in your right hand should work but some of the shifts can be a little athletic - so I'll try transferring to my mouth for the shift......
