Garage opener

Interior Exterior

Q:
I found a great spot for my garage opener clipped inside the tray between the climate controls and the steering column. You can not see it there but there is a problem, it only opens the garage from inside the garage. I think the aluminum surrounding the opener will not let the signal travel forward, only backwards and up. Anyone have a good spot to clip or tape a small opener? I am tired of it rattling in the cup holder. My visors are long gone. No wonder the alarm range is so short.

I keep mine in a small black zippered (parking meter) change purse. It's in the black plastic cubby at the far left. You can't even see it there which is nice and stealthy. I just press on the purse to open the garage door, no need to remove the clicker. Easy.

I don't know if anyone here is familiar with this but I found it on the Audi/VW forums. Ben Moulding (brittmo@xmission.com) makes the Taidan opener for Genie and Liftmaster brand garage door openers. He modifies the opener to be weather proof for under hood mounting and the trigger is the high beam headlights Pretty neat for cars that don't have homelink, I have it on my other cars and it works great. If you don't have a Genie or Liftmaster (also makes Sears, maybe other openers) you can buy a receiver that ties into your existing opener. I believe the last time I checked these were around $40, you can email Ben for more information. No affiliation, just a happy customer. I have some instructions here:

and here is what it looks like:

I velcroed my opener between the center tunnel and the passenger seat. Works fine.

I threw all my OEM remotes in a drawer and bought one of those 3 button key ring programmable jobs...works great, long range, and cheap. Bought it from here.

My black opener (Sears) is velcroed to the underside of the top of the "cubby" opening on the driver's side. You can't see it from outside the car, but it's handy and opens the garage from the street without a problem.

What happened to the whole "wanna be involved in the experience" attitude of the Lotus owner? Get out and open your dang garage door yourself!

Mine clips onto the sunvisor just fine.

Mine clips onto the wanna-be cupholders.

I installed a piece of that anti-slip rubber mat they sell for tool drawers in the tray and everything pretty much stays put unless I'm REALLY hitting the twisties. Sorry, no pix, my car is 3,000 miles away at the moment.

I keep mine clipped between the steering column and climate controls. It works great. I usually click the control when I'm about 300 feet away and it works every time.

Nice, just bought one. Thanks

Several years ago I bought a simple flush black push button and some wire at Radio Shack and connected it to my controller. I then drilled a hole in one of the unused button panels on my Z3s and then in the cigarette "snuffer" on my Z4. Then just stuffed the controller up under the console out of the way. When I sold the Z4 and bought the Elise, I took the assembly out and drilled a hole in the left cubby panel up underneath about in line with the light switches. Installed the button and stuffed the controller in the space behind the light switch panel. Tied a string to the controller so if it falls down out of reach I can still pull it out if I have to. Now I have a flush black push button up out of the way in the bottom of the left side light switch panel. Works fine from 100' or more down the drive. No controller to rattle around the cockpit and get lost or stolen. Easy to reach. Clean install. Here is a picture (the box on the left is the controller for my bluetooth hands-free). Sorry for the blurry pic.

I keep my opener stored handily on, or very near to my couch. When I get near the house I call my wife and she then gets up and pushes the button to open the garage door. It's worked perfectly well for over a year and only requires a quarterly preventive maintenance gift of Prada shoes.

I second the suggestion for velcroing to the underside of the left cubby. When I had it on the bottom of the cubby, it didn't work. Works great on the underside and it's stealth.
