Q:
HARNESSES:
I've used Sparco 6pth harnesses for years, but the Schroth ASM 4pt looks mighty interesting. Anyone have an opinion of it from crash experience or data versus a standard 6pt harness like the Sparcos?
HEAD & NECK RESTRAINTS:
I've used Hans devices only, since it appeared nothing was comparable. But what about the R3? Is it as good or better? Their marketing and test data suggests it IS better, but I'm curious what you guys think and have experienced in racing situations with it.
Also, with the R3, either you have to tape a foam insert to your seat for the spine to fit into--or you attach the whole R3 unit AND the foam insert to the seat. Any input on this, as far as positive or negative experiences?
Thanks guys.
Dave
P.S. Getting current feedback is important with safety stuff, so looking at historic input isn't so good...unless nothing's changed.

I think the Schroth ASM system is NOT compatible with HANS, due to the extra flap sewn into the belt. I use Schroth Profi II-6 with HANS, and I'm planning to add a sub-belt hole in the seat bottom.
A:
Yeah, I think that's correct. If I went w/the ASM harness, I'd do the R3 H&N Restraint instead of Hans. I sold my Hans and all of my safety gear last year, so I'm starting with a clean slate.

Any particular reason why?

Why did I sell my gear?
If that's what you're asking, I sold my race car the year before, wasn't doing track events and I basically don't hang onto things I'm not using. And I like to refresh all of the safety gear every so often anyway.
Is that what you were asking about?
A:
Yep. I thought you had an issue with the HANS device. Thanks for the reply.

I've used nothing but the Simpson stuff in my last 2 cars.
Works great, easily customized to your needs and a lot less money.

Schroth Profi II - 6 HANS harness and HANS device. Picked mainly because I found enough info to understand it and how it is used and it suited me.
My only issue is that with many seats the top of the HANS device is pressed forward which restricts your head movement a bit and puts pressure on your chest. It isn't a big deal, but the HANS device is a lot more comfy with a seat that does not interfere with it. I currently have the Sparco REV seat and it does not interfere with the HANS device.

Actually, I sold my suit, nomex, helmet, hans, gloves and radios to another racer all in one shot. I don't know about any issues w/the Hans, other than the constant debate about what's better than what. After seeing the SAE whitepapers a few years ago, it was pretty clear that the Hans was the most effective in a frontal impact, so that's what I used.
At this point, I'm curious about the R3, was very skeptical initially, but would like to see how the tests are coming out now that it's in its second year. I've not seen a head-to-head comparison that wasn't published by makers of the R3, so far as I'm concerned, the jury's still out. I'm a little concerned how it applies leverage against soft tissue areas of the lower abdomen, and how that would allow head extension while the body moves away from the seat at the moment of impact (even harnessed in properly).
What kind of issues w/Hans are you aware of?
