door insert removal

Interior Exterior

Q:
Hey guys,
Had a question. I've got the threads bookmarked for removing the door panel, has anyone removed just the teardrop shaped insert (this is the part that has the window control mounted to it).
What holds it on? Assume the whole door panel has to come off?
Thsk
Chris

I think you do need to remove the panel first. You should too, as it's easy/quick.
For the panel, there are 4/5 visible metal screws. One hidden plastic snap on the bottom inside near the door hinge. After removing them, the panel can be snapped out.
The tear drop insert attaches using 3 slots where one side is bigger and a plastic tab on the door panel slides in. Sort of like when you hang a picture with a hanging tab on the back on a nail. You can easily see them on the back once you take off the panel. If you unscrew window control, you should be able to slide the insert off without breaking the plastic tabs.
All this is from memory, but I remembered it was easy to remove them.

I was told the other weekend that the large panel is velcro'ed at the bottom and once liberated should be slid forward. There is a plastic "Jesus clip" at the rear of the panel that's easily broken if the panel is pried or pulled.
Just relaying what I was told, heh IIRC.

While we're on this topic, I'm having a hard time removing the screw that is at the lower apex of the door pane. You know, the plastic one. Any tricks to this or should I just put in some elbow power?

YES there are velcro strips at the bottom of the door and Yes there is a "C" clip at the back bottom that slide into place so the door must slide back.
the front plastic screw dickydoo os a joke but just use a small phillips head screwdriver and turn. simple as eatin pie and icecream!

It seems the door panel was the last to be designed and had to utilize whatever hardware was left in the Lotus parts bin. What are there, 4 different screws/clips? And for no good reason.
