Interior Exterior
Q:
I had to replace the mirror on my M100 a few years ago. It literally fell off! Probably too much track driving. The M100 mirror has a nice feature I wish they had put on the Elise - it has two small lights under it. The mirror is wired through the windshield surround. I can't imagine why they didn't do that on the Elise. Anyway, on the M100, I put it back on with a kit from the local auto parts store. There is an art to doing this but its basically a special glue. However, I don't feel its quite as strong as the original and I'm always weary that it might come off after repeated usage of the day night feature (or in my case, turning on/off the little lights).
Anyway, the SLK mirror sounds ideal but I'm reluctant to take the button off for the same reason that it would be less strong after replacement. I gather that mirror buttons (i.e. the mirrors themselves) are not universal in size? I assume not. Too bad Lotus isn't owned by GM anymore because I bet some Camaro mirror would fit it. Maybe some enterprising person can figure out a standard mirror that fits without replacing the button (how's that for a challenge).

The stock Elise mirror for the last couple of years has been the same as ones used in European GM, in particular the Opel/Vauxhall Astra and, I think, the Vectra.

I do not like the shape, I do not like the price, I do not like the lack of day/night
I know you don't want to hear it so pulg your ears Now for everyone else he is wrong...
The micromirror is the best item I have bought for my Elise and my Exige
Take the MicroMirror challenge You would think I should be getting paid for this but sadly I get sweet FA

I hate to say this... but I agree 100% with Patrick. God, that hurt.

Actually, I disagree. I have the Micromirror, and I like it. But, the clear bra I had put on by Premier was the best item (coverage goes up the front clam almost to the mirrors, and the installation quality was excellent), followed by the Multivex side view mirrors (world of difference), then the Fujita CAI (the sound is intoxicating), and then the Micromirror is tied with my audio system upgrade. Last place are my carpet buttons (but I still like them).

Come on then guys,
black or aliminum.
Which will go best with my storm Ti with black interior?
A:
The only reservation I had with brushed Aluminum for the micromirror is that when viewed from the front it's going to really draw attention to the V1 beside of it.
I think I may paint the front half of it black.

I've been on the fence about the micro-mirror since I got my car (10 months ago). I find it interesting that some drivers that bought it love it, and others think it's too small. I don't like the OEM mirror, and chucked my visors about 10 minutes after bringing my Elise home.
I'm wondering how much your driving position, and it's effect on the mirror's angle of view, has to do with your opinions. A seating position close to the mirror would give the driver a narrower field of view, and sitting back would widen it. So, how tall are you micro-mirror users, and where are you sitting? And of course, are you satisfied with the micro-mirror? Gangsta/ricer slouching doesn't count!
p.s.- At least we didn't get the Camaro steering wheel they used in the Elan.

Installed my new rear view mirror today. $22 including shipping Day,night Stock mirror is 2.5" x 9.5" (glass) After market 2.2" X 7.5" (glass)
Removed old plinth, installed new plinth Looks much smaller.
OK John, I too am waiting to hear what you did. I don't like the "truck" mirror we have. I don't want one too small either...curoius to what you did and to see the pictures!!

Both of my Micro Mirrors have been black

6'0" I sit a few clicks forward and I can see everything between the seats It is the perfect size, not too small at all
BTW I used to think if it was a rectangular shape it would be perfect but the oval shape allows more of a forward view around the mirror and I can still see everything out the back

Can't go wrong with black.

My Elise and my Exige both came with StarShield so I did not even have to think about that...but I would agree that driving one of these cars without paint protection is a very bad idea
A:
I would bet Sector 111 would let you return it if you do not like it. Easy install. Or sell it on the forum. Mine is brushed aluminum, matches the interior and no glare issues.

Has anyone been challenged in SS class in autocrossing for having a micromirror. If you look at the regs, replacing the mirror is technically not allowed. I had mine on last season but was wondering if anyone has been challenged. It obviously gives increased visibility, thats why we use it.
A:
Here is a picture of the mirror that I installed. It is smaller, but not too small. Sorry for the poor quality. THe old mirror below is held upside down. I placed the plinth right below where the old one was. (because of the mirror construction) I removed the old plinth by heating it with a soldering iron, and then twisted it off. I removed the residual glue with a razor. The new mirror quality is good.
JC Whitney Item # ZX133316B $14.99

Looks neater than the large truck mirror we all have. When you took the plinith off the windshield from the old mirror, can you see where the adhisive was from the old mirror? I know you scrapped it off, but its there any signs of what was there before?
Thanks
Bruce
A:
Bruce, the glue came off completely.

Another vote for the Micro-Mirror. Incredible improvement over the humongous stock mirror. Since the passenger seat headrest limits the rear field of view, you don't need a bigger mirror. [I'm only 5'8" and I sit as far back as my short little legs will allow].
Brushed aluminum matches the interior metal pieces nicely. I love the oval shape, as well.

I never understand this lack of acceptance of what the other one prefers. Some want it silver, others want it yellowm, while yet others want to green or bronze. I want LSS and others want the track pack. I think it is part of the culture of Lotus that each of us wants to make our car our own by modifying it to suit our needs and our tastes. Respect the other opinion. (Want a divergent opinion, just take a look at Randy's clam!)
On to the mirror....
I investiaged mirror alternatives before Sector 111 provided their solution. I know the oval mirror was available for hot rodders. The company that supplies the oval mirror has a rectangular one as well. I personally(!) perfer rectangular. I also prefer functional, regardless of appearance.
(I thought the oval mirror missed a bit at the corners. I wanted rectangular. If Sector 111 had provided the other mirror, I would have bought one. This is my personal opinion.)
So if you look at my car, you will wonder about the owner. "What was he thinking??!??!" Missing grilles, tie wrapped chicken wire, and primered holes.
I like my car! Here is my mirror. You should see the back side. I don't but you can if you look. As always, visit my site to see how to do it... (Hint, I use the original as the basis for the replacement.)
