Clear bra - not for me

Interior Exterior

Q:
so has everyone on this thread who refused starshield or any kind of protection finally get it done or is still driving around with no shielding?
A:
A couple of questions.
Is the 3m (or other) material cut specifically for the elise? If so where can you buy it?
Does anybody know of a shop in southeast michigan?
Thanks.
Jeff

Hard to wax around the edge of the bra.
Wax?

Hello Jeff. 3M just makes the film. There are several design companies out there that cut the patterns.
Send me an e-mail at ryan@autopaintguard.com I can try to find someone for you in your area.
Thanks

I purchased the 3M clear bra just this past week from www.clearmask.com. I have starshield on my Lotus, so I thought I would buy it and try to do it myself on my new Explorer. First... I was surprised at how inexpensive it was. It came with all the material perfectly cut for the Explorer, with three different grades of material, and with different parts of the vehicle sold as optional pieces. Also included at no extra charge was the headlight and foglight pieces, and installation kit, and a DVD showing how to apply it.
For this particular vehicle, it was very difficult to install. There are just too many curves and angles. Some parts were simple, but the majority of it did not come out well at all, only because of the shape of the truck. I may buy another kit and try it again. I would imagine that the Elise would be MUCH easier to do rather than the Explorer. I would also use Clearmask.com again. Shipping was fast and packaging was perfect.

I wouldn't recommend doing the install yourself on the Lotus. Some people may be able to do the install but in order for the warranty to take place etc it is better off to have a proffesional do the install.
ClearMask in most cases uses the Aero film which does not stretch at all, that may be why you coudn't get the explorer piece to lay down.
Thanks

I bought my AR car in April 2005 with no clear bra, just the pieces in front of the rear wheels. I find those areas much harder to clean road tar. I have some small chips on the front of the car, but not very noticable. In retrospect, I made the correct choice for me.
I have over 9000 miles, two track days, and two autocrosses, though I will say I have not yet hit a cone.

For your rear pieces, try spraying a plexus cleaner or go to Walmart and apply the polish wax Ice prior to racing. This will make the tar removal a lot easier in the future.
Thanks

See to me it stretched beautifully! Part of my problem was I accidentally put one piece on the wrong side of the truck so I had the glue on the outside... I think also I used a little dab too much soap. I could probably do the Elise perfectly, as the shape is much simpler. And.. warranty... what warranty? If you bought the car without it... what warranty harm is there in adding it yourself?

You think the Elise has simpler shapes than a ford explorer?????

I didn't get the pieces in front of the rear wheels but I want them, anyone know where I can get them and what a good price is?
Sorry for the n00b question but I don't even know what to call them to input into the search engine.

I didn't have time to read all of the replys so sorry if this has been said before but I am soooo glad I got starshield. I wish I could have gotten more(over the rear wheel wells) I didn't buy the car as an investment but I can't imagine what my car would be worth now if I didn't have it. It sure wouldn't look as good as it does now. I know looks doesn't matter to some but to me its part of the ongoing Lotus experience. Anyway I think your dealer is way off base on this one - but each to thier own. BTW from what little I know this one is for a professional, do not try this at home.

Hello. I'm sorry, I meant the warranty with the film not the car. Technically the 3M only gives warranty if the product is professionally installed, but there are ways around it I guess.
Yea, if you add to much soap that can cause it to be extra slippery. That's why I have a seperate bottle as well filled with water and a little alcohol.
Here are the Xpel parts that I carry. Click Here

Yes. Much. Too many squared edges, curves and angles on the Explorer. The Elise is much rounder... smoother and well simpler.
