Consumer Reports Best Wax

Interior Exterior

Q:
Howdy folks,
I just received my July issue of CR and read their article on the tests of 28 different liquid, paste and spray waxes.
In the liquid category their top pick with a score of 84 was Black Majic wet shine liquid wax BM48016 in a tie with Turtle wax Carnauba Car Wax T-6.
The categorys were: Gloss, Durability, Ease of Use, Cleaning, Scratching/Hazing and Compatibility with Plastics.
The only drawback with the Black Majic was it required extra buffing to pevent to prevent streaking.
The Turtle Wax's only drawback was that it was only average in the scratching/hazing category.
In the Paste category, Nu Finish was first with a score of 71.
In the Spray category, Eagle One wax as you dry was first with a score of 54.
In the Quick pick section they said if your car is new or still has a newer finish
their pick was Turtle Wax spray [score of 54] based on easy usage, economical and will not degrade existing shine but it needs to be applied frequently to maintain the protection.
Are any of you using their top two picks? If so, how do you like them.
Any other comments?
I have been using PS-21 which came in third in the Paste category with a score of 61.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Best regards,
mr t - Nederland, CO

I use Meguiar's Gold Class. I considered Meguiar's nxt generation but read somewhere that Gold Class contains carnauba wax while nxt is all synthetic (also read recommendations of using carnauba based wax for the StarShield).
I'm happy with Gold Class. Easy to use... just avoid contact with black plastic parts.

Thanks for replying to my thread.
CR rated Meguiar's Gold Class number 6 with a score of 68.
The gloss was slightly less than the top three, the durability was listed as average and the ease of use was also slightly lower than their highest mark.
Happy waxing,

Here's my system:
Dirt
S100
Klasse SG
Klasse AIO
Paint
Pretty happy with that. Well, except for the 'dirt' part.

Klasse products were not listed in their report.
FYI - Meguiars NTX generation tech wax paste was last with a score of 50.
and Meguiar's NTX generation Spray wax was also last with a score of
42.

That's interesting that the NXT was last. I use the liquid and think it does a great job. I'm much happier with it that I was with the Gold Class.

I suspect they reviewed mostly over the counter type waxes? Despite the extra cost of boutique products, I have not found many over the counter products that match up well to what is available online. By over the counter, I mean things that are typically available at most auto stores, Target, etc.
But as I always say, use what you like!

Agreed. Since it was consumer reports, their target audience is probably the mass public which has no interest in going the extra step for a perfect finish.
I find there is no comparison between a "cheap" brand and some real detailing stuff like Zaino/Klasse/Wolfgang.

Hey, where was the "nice smelling" category?!? The NXT spray wax would win that one hands down! ha!
I just Zaino'd my car today for the first time. I did 3 coats of polish with their gloss enhancer spray between coats. I didn't take it out of the garage to see the results but will do so tomorrow. We'll see how she looks.
Prior to Zaino I've always used a paste wax occasionally and a spray wax every time I wash the car. Meguiar's Gold paste and NXT spray. I used to use Turtle Wax silicone spray wax with great results but it was a little tough in that you had to buff quite a bit to make sure you didn't leave any streaks. The NXT spray seems to work well and like I said earlier it sure smells nice!
A:
I have never bought the same wax twice. Once I run out of something, I always try something different the next time. Right now I'm using the Turtle Wax spray, and it works fine, but I'm sure when it's empty I'll get something else.

Liquid Glass polish works well for me.

Fan of Griot's Garage products - great results. My only problem: Time to do it!

I just did a coat of RejeX friday evening, took it out of the garage yesterday and she looks better than ever. $19.95 for a bottle and it'll last me a long time. Easy as pie to apply, not a streak in sight, finish is slicker than snot. Great buy! (Don't remember who recommended it recently here but THANKS!!!)

I'm always really skeptical of any automotive review from Consumer Reports. Their always very biased towards the needs of middle america who needs room for there 2.3 kids, holders for 7 mega big gulps at arms reach, prefers the suspension feels like a hover craft, and the only thing the want to shift is their fat arse from one side of the luxurious Corinthian pleather massage seat to the other. With that in mind I guess a wax review from them might have a bit of merit but I'm not going to rush out and toss out everything in my garage based on what they've got to say.

Same here - RejeX. Quite pleased with the results.
I've started using it on other cars and have found the cars stay cleaner. Did my truck with it and towed with it to/from the WCLM. On the way the bugs splats were fewer and nearly "fell" off and then in the torrential rain on the trip home the grime didn't seem to be nearly as bad as when I had regular wax on it.

There you have it!
I first learned about Rejex in 2004 in an RV magazine that I get from Good Sam's Club. It was just a product information write up.
I am glad to hear positive reviews about this product. I am going to get a bottle.
Take care everyone!

Thanks for the complete rankings.
Mother's new reflection line is one of the better over the counter lines, for waxes and spray waxes, but they are a bit hard to find. I'm surprised CR did not test them.
I have not used Rejex in quite a while, but I suspect a high quality sealant will do much the same in terms of not allowing dirty, etc. to stick to the paint.
I'll have to try it out again compared to the latest in sealants, to see if there is anything that makes it special.

I agree, I use mothers and I would like to see how they compared too. I thought they were one of the best names in car care products you can buy.
A:
my Zaino update. I took the Elise out today (sunny). The Zaino'd SY looked better than ever! I have to say this is the best shine I've ever had on any of my cars. It definitely takes more time than your usual wax because of the multiple coats, but the results are awesome.
The shine can best be described as a wet look, really glossy and mirror-like.
I'm a Zaino believer!
Rejex sounds like a good product with it's ability to keep dirt and bug remnants off the paint and wheels, but how does the shine compare to Zaino? Anyone tried both?
A:
I know consumer reports isn't supposed to (but not to say I actually believe that) to be influenced by advertising dollars, but how many of the winners are advertisers? And Bullcrap that the Good Sam article on Rejex was just a "product review" haha. It was reviewed once they were offered to pay for it. I take anything written in any mag with a huge grain of salt. Especially after running a business, it really is suprising how often someone contacts you and offers to do a "review" on you. I've even got it from the local newspaper, the Atlanta Journal Constitution. For only $1,000 they would do a one day "review" on me in the business section.
In an official non-paid review. I absolutly love Zaino. I've tried most OTC products out there and really with enough prep and elbow grease most of them are good products, but zaino appears that one notch up.
