Removing the Dash

Interior Exterior

Q:
Anybody have references to remove the dashboard? I am installing the V1 and Laser Jammer, and the jammer has some hardware that I'd like to put into the dash. Thanks in advance!
I searched around, but the only dash references I found were here:

Taking the dashboard out is a real pain. Any chance you could access the area you ned by removing the radio? This will give you access to the are behind the spedometer.

I have the starter panel out, but can't get to the "firewall" area. I need to bring two wires in from the cooler compartment to the interior and hide a small 3" box and a small speaker plus "isntall" a small switch and light, probably around the steering column area.
Anyone thats gotten more then the radio and starter panel out, please let me know what else.

its actually not as bad as it looks; i recently pulled the whole speedo cluster out to see how much work changing the LEDs would be (thats another story; ill post on that later...
to pull out the speedo, you remove 6 screws on the steering column; this allows the top and bottom pieces of the column to come apart. once you do that, you pull off the bezel covering the speedo. it is held in place with 4 press clips and some velcro at the top. use a pry tool or panel puller to remove the bezel by popping out each clip.( note that the clips will most likely fall inside their mount holes but you can fish them out once you remove the speedo cluster.)
The cluster itself is held in by 4 screws. remove these 4 screws. there are two support brackets that attach to the cluster. remove both brackets by removing 4 additional screws, 2 on each side and seperating the brackets. now the speedo can be lifted up and out. there are two plugs on the back of the speedo. one large 24? pin connector and another 12 pin (with only 3 wires) its ok to disconnect these plugs. (btw the CAN wires are the two twisted wires in the 12 pin plug). the cluster disassembles by removing 4 nuts that hold it to the mounting bracket, 4 screws, then 4 additional nuts. once all are removed, the cluster back cover slides off (you will need to slide a razor blade under the warranty seal to loosen it.)
if you want to fish a wire through; use the harness main grommet under the front cover and use a stiff fish line to route the wire through; the other end will pop out in the speedo cluster hole.

one more thing... the rest of the dash comes apart using the same methods; the remaining front facing bezels must be removed (i.e the vent radio and airbag bezels. ) all are attached using the clips with the exception of the airbag panel which may have additional screws; ill check on that soon. once the front bezels are removed, the screws holding the top dash pad in place. remove those and the the aluminum frame is left...

Great pictures Rob! Does the lens for the instrument cluster (the thing with the emblem on it) come off of the gauges? Mine has a defect on the inside that I would like to try to wipe off, but that is a lot of disassembly to find out that it is essentially a sealed unit. My dealer has offered to replace the gauges under warranty 'if it really bugs' me. Would they also punch in the correct mileage so that I wouldn't have to make a notation on the title about altered mileage?

the entire cluster disassembles but from the back; the front lens is glued on so you edn up needing to take the back cover off, then pull the boards and face out from behind. problem is that the warranty seal is on the odometer so i would recommend taking it in and having the entire unit replaced. the dealer will be able to flash the cluster eeprom through the CAN lines on the obdII port to give it the same miles as your original cluster.
one other consideration you might make would be to pull the cluster out and then use some compressed air to removed any foreign objects on the face; of course if its a smudge then then there no choice but to pull it apart. id just have the dealer do it since they will warranty it.

The airbag door has 4 plastic clips that are designed to break when the airbag is deployed(the backs will fall behind the dash). You will need to ask your dealer whether he can get these clips before you attempt any removal (order extra, maybe 12 or 16!!!!!).If he can,be very careful when refitting as these break very easily, gently position the airbag door until you can feel the clips engage and then "wiggle" until you are happy that the clips are in the correct alignment, then push fully home.

How do the side sills come out. I want to run some wires underneath. Do the side sills come out and then the starter button panel..or the other way around.

it's easy depending on how much you want to remove.. I'm taking it off again this week, I'll try to do a write up on how to remove it..

I ordered about 20 extra clips for the passenger airbag, it uses about 4, if i remember right, but for 20 clips it was like $85!

I agree. The price I paid was with shipping, but it came as quite a surprise. I hope the dealer did not just screw me....
