Shift lever removal & adjustment?

Interior Exterior

Q:
Greetings y'all,
Well, while I've got the center cosole off for painting I am looking to do the Stan Shifter frame reinforcement modification (i.e. additional nut, bolt and spacer). Furthermore, I am looking to remove the shift lever (post recall round stock version) so I can bend it back to straight (i.e. not towards fifth gear as it came from the factory). Sadly, I have been unable to download the service manual. Can anyone help me out with the section from the service manual that details R&Ring the shift lever / shaft, and, while we are it, the section that details the fore / aft, and lateral adjustment of the shift lever at the cable ends.
THANKS!
PS: Doin' the shift knob painting too. Stan, I don't know you, but I love you!

Here's all that I found in the service manual that I downloaded some time ago. Not the most informative I'm afraid.
Gearchange Cable Adjustment
Under normal circumstances, no adjustment to the gear cables should be required. If a cable is replaced
in service, it may be necessary to make minor adjustments via the threaded ball joint at the front of the cable
in order to accommodate lever movement within the shroud aperture.
Gearchange Cable Replacement
For access to the gear cables, the gear lever shroud and parking brake lever trim must be removed: Unscrew
the gear lever knob, remove the single screw each side of the shroud, and withdraw the shroud over the
gear and parking brake levers. Remove the engine bay undertray.
At the front end of the cables, unclip the inner cable ball joint sockets from the ball pins on the mechanism
levers. Release the outer cable plastic abutment block from the mounting frame. At the rear end of the cables,
remove the 'R' clips retaining the inner cable eyes to the levers, and the 'C' clips securing the outer cables to
the abutment bracket. Release the 'P' clips and cable ties as necessary to allow the cables to be withdrawn
from the car, noting the routing of the cables past the parking brake lever and wiring harness.
Refit in reverse order to removal, paying particular attention to the routing through or alongside the parking
brake lever mounting frame.

I am looking to remove the shift lever (post recall round stock version) so I can bend it back to straight (i.e. not toward fifth gear as it came from the factory). One, bend and then straightening the gear lever will weaken it. Second, if you make it straight, then the shifter is going to be hitting you leg in first and second gear. Getting it into reverse is going to be even more trouble.

You can change the "angle" slightly by adjusting the cables. making the adjustments at either end can move the "center" position of the shift lever if things are too far out of whack. But then you run into the possibility that you may contact the opening of the console with the shift lever...

elisetalk is great.
i removed my center console yesterday in a fit of car lightening frenzy while installing my lotus motorsports harness bar.
i like the bare gear lever look so i left it exposed but noticed that the lever bends slightly to the right. i thought maybe the lever was defective but a quick search on ET proved otherwise.
thanks for being here!
