$275 For 3 Tiny Windows!!!!?

Interior Exterior

Q:
Okay. In the last couple of days I had called and checked around for pricing on tinting my 3 windows. Pretty much everyone told me $150 for 3 windows. The fourth guy I went to check it out just because the 3rd guy told me he might be able to install for me today (Friday). I went there and this guy wanted to rip me off. He told me $275 for 3 windows. I started to laugh when he told me that. I told him i got 3 quotes and they're all $150, and asked him how he get $275 for 3 little tinty windows. Guess what he said when I asked him that, NOTHING. Yep, he didn't know what to say because I busted him trying to rip me off. I just got in the car and drove off laughing. What is he thinking!!!?
A:
3 little tinty windows. Freudian slip.
What is he thinking!!!? I'm sure he's in the window-tinters' forum complaining about how an Elise owner made a fool of him.

What is he thinking!!!? maybe he was trying to rip you off, or maybe he was using a different type of film that is superior to what the others were offering. you have a high end car, that doesnt exactly say you are cheap or poor. i have a freind who used to work at a high end steroe /tinting place, and they were always more expensive than the others, but in life ususally you get what you pay for. that is if you spend the time to find out about the product offered, rather than put someone on the defensive by your line of questioning. its always worth gently, but being assertive, why there is such a price difference. i own a business that deals only in high end product/service. my prices if someone just asks are "more than the others", but when you find out what exactly is involved, and how comprehensive and relible the service on the product is, and compare price per visit. i am about 1/4 the price per visit, and my finished productspeaks for itself. i have been in business for 17 years, am not in the phone book, and when people start questioning my pricing withouttaking the time to hear my answer, i would want them for a client either. i am NOT saying you did this, as i was not there, but i can tell who i do and do not want to work with very quickly when i meet a potential customer. maybe persue it a little more and have the attitude you will work with this guy, and find out everything about what he is offering. he will sense your interest, and I am sure he will do more than "say nothing". i have been in his postion where it doesnt matter what i might say, someone has already decided "i am not worth it". thats cool to, as i am very busy, and dont justify my pricing, I just produce top quality product. If not, i would not have survived for 17 yrs. maybe give him another chance to see if he is "a rip off", you might be missing a great product. then again, i could be way off on this too.

I got a quote from a local shop for 3M (superior quality) 35%. At first they told me around $275 (same as you), but that was an over-the-counter estimate. When she inspected my car, she reduced the price to $180 (without me ever saying/arguing the point at all: it was my first quote and I had no idea what it would cost). Maybe he was just quoting his standard price without regard to how small your windows are.
A:
I've tinted windows before on a couple of my cars, and the size of the window only matters if it's big enough to take more than one sheet. Otherwise, doesn't matter how small it is, the amount of work is about the same and the cost of materials is negligible. If the installers realized the passenger seat won't slide forward and instead had to be removed to get good access back there, I wouldn't be surprised if they charged even more.

I am concerned about this, too. I haven't broken that news to them yet. Maybe I'll just remove the seat myself. Seems to be a lot of posts on here about doing that...

He came outside to look at the car before he gave me the quote.

Maybe he's dealt with an Elise already, and the other three haven't. MattG brought up a good point about the seats and accessibility, and it's something that I've thought about as well.

But he was a small asian guy.

bald guys don't get a discount at the barber, do they?
And, perhaps the high priced guy will do a better job. Maybe the cheap jobs will have bubbles in them and start peeling a year later.
Just some thoughts. Ultimately, you've got to trust your gut.
I'm not the cheapest dentist in town. You can get a crown in my office, and you can get a crown at the guy down the street for far less. But, they won't be the same result.

I had a guy come to me, use good film, and tint 5 windows on my bimmer for $150!! (and it's a hatch so the rear is big) That was an outstanding deal though. I would think $150 would be a fair price for the elise. The sides will be a piece of cake but the rear window isn't going to be fun at all. Possibly not too bad if you whip the seats out, but that's probably not a normal procedure when tinting windows, lol.

I don't think it takes years to learn how to apply film to window, but I'm sure it'll takes years to remove and install a crown.
A:
I had both side windows done for about 80 bux. I personally see no need to do the rear window.
A:
It was about the same here. $225 for the sides and rear windows. The guy at the shop quoted me 275 but then reduced it to 225 when I showed him the quote his manager gave me over the inet. So far though, the window tint job is the only work I've had done to the car that hasn't been completely messed up in some way (there is only 1 tiny spec of dirt that I could find).... man I hate shops.
A:
I got a really good tint job done on my Vehicross (7 panes) for around $225, iirc.
$275 for an Elise is a rip, plain and simple.
A:
Should I go with Llumar or Sun-Tek brand?
A:
I paid $110.00 for high quality tint on 3 windows.\
I removed the passenger seat.
A:
I have an appointment with a place on Saturday for $130. High quality metallic film with a lifetime warranty. When I called they weren't sure if they could do the car. They looked it up on their system and discovered they had done one already. Hopefully they'll know how to take out the seat or work around it...

LOL! True. Would you mind telling that to... the world??? A lot of folks think it's a simple "carpentry job."
