i read in another thread someone had done this... i'm curious where exactly? any pics? is this basically a substitution for using a paper towel at the pump to protect from dripping?

If you don't wipe the spill before it runs to the edge of the film, it will look ugly in a year or less as the fuel (a solvent) will disolve the glue between the paint and the film, plus attack the film and make it discolour and curl outwards at the edges.
The film would be to protect the paint from the hose nozzle trigger , and from scuffing of the paint caused by repeated wiping of the gas dribble/dust combo.

I just put 3M film on my new Mini, and asked about doing this to protect against chips. They said it would work, but any drips would cause it to start to peel, causing abrasive road dirt to get under it.
