Q:
As you all know by now, the 2007 Lotus Elises built after December, 2006 will have 2 small new bumperettes in the back, on either side of the license plate.
I have been wondering what they might look like.
A friend of mine who writes the Automotive reviews for Newsweek magazine gets a new car every 5 days to try out from the various car manufacturers. (Nice job!)
She pulled a brand new Porsche Cayman into my driveway two days ago and I noticed two new bumperettes on either side of the license plate. They stuck out about 3-4 inches and were about 5 inches wide, the same color as the car, a handsome silver.
Try as I might, I can't find a single picture of the back of the 2007 Federal Porsche Cayman, but believe me, they were there. And they didn't look bad...the back just didn't look as "smooth."
Well, we shall see what we shall see.

Here they are (as long as eBay hosts them):

Thanks Bill!
Here's what it looks like without them:

It looks like it has hemorrhoids.

Those are some seriously ugly butt warts. I hope Lotus does it better.

tumors. eh, what's the point? I guess if you get hit directly in the middle by a go cart they may do something. Them preventing much damage seems about as likely as someone using our emergency escape cable in the trunk. lol

Now......try to imagine: (Photo by MattG...thanks!)

I'm sure Lotus does it better.

About two months ago I noticed the black bumperettes on the back of the Ford GT!
Here's a picture without them - the one I saw in the showroom had big ugly black bumperettes sticking out the back - brand new Ford GT about a month ago!

You could also look at any Boxster or 911 to see the same bumperettes. They used to be black rubber but for the last few years they've been painted.
My question isn't what they will look like, but how they will be tied into the structure.
A:
And how much of an impact are they supposed to take?
A:
2.5 mphwithout damage, right?

I don't think they will be. It's probably going to be just bonded on either side of the license plate. That portion of the grass catcher/rear grill, will be sacrificial now.

2.5mph without damage to the car, except the bumper.
A:
So at 3 mph.......it's all over?
Okay...
That's as fast as a 6-year old on a tricycle.

I think I'm just going to put on a license frame tag on that reads: "Go on. Hit me. My next clam will be carbon fiber."

Blimey that Ford GT looks sensational.

If they are black protrusions next to the license plate, I don't think they'll look all that bad. They'll blend in pretty well, and since the lower part of the Elise is a bit "industrial" or "mechanical" looking already, I don't think it will stand out like it would on a smooth, body-colored plastic tail.
