regarding 2007 Lotus Elise and "bumperettes"

Interior Exterior

Q:
Does anyone think it is strange that the bumpers are due on cars being built in less than two months, and no one knows what they look like? No pictures? Is it possible the bumpers have not been approved, so there is nothing to show? Possibly that is why the Exige S got rushed out before the end of the year? No cars are scheduled for production after 1-1-07? Something is up, and Lotus is keeping it quiet.
A:
I don't think they will be. It's probably going to be just bonded on either side of the license plate. That portion of the grass catcher/rear grill, will be sacrificial now.
Here's where it gets really stupid. That's 2.5mph of the ELISE hitting a wall, right? The Elise has relatively low momentum due to its low mass. An SUV weighing twice as much has twice as much momentum, so those bumperettes are now good for 1.25mph impacts...
A:
Seems like by the license plate on an Elise seems too low to protect anything. I am guessing they are on the clam.
A:
last January (I think it was then) before the Laguna Seca track day the shop wa s doing complementary pretrack day inspections. One of the people there that day was the west coast Lotus rep. He suggested that not much needed to be done to the car - merely some reinforcement behind the clam.
have fun

A:
Don't forget about bumper height regulations. Good point! How they go on the side of the license plate and still meet height requirements, I just don't know.
A:
The first thing that I thought of were the chunks on the back of the 914, maybe even from the plate all the way out to the edge of the car.
A:
If they are black protrusions next to the license plate, I don't think they'll look all that bad. Don't forget about bumper height regulations.
A:
As you all know by now, the 2007 Lotus Elises built after December, 2006 will have 2 small new bumperettes in the back, on either side of the license plate.
Is that anything more than a rumor/speculation? The only thing I know is the exemptions will expire. What form the compliance will take, if any, is only rumor/speculation, right?

Heard it from the Lotus guys. Not a rumor. Apparently.
Also they said that the '06's must all be sold before '07s go on the market.
And they said that some '07's built in '06 have no "bumperettes." Ones built in '07 have "bumperettes" and the front has some foam in it with no visual changes.
I'm not making this stuff up, but I could be wrong, yeah.
Lotus could be messing with our heads.
