Q:
I am attempting to save a few dollars when it is finally time to go out and buy my elise!
I live in Colorado, and I have a bad weather driver. My question is how often do you use your hardtop? and is it a "must have" accessory?
thanks
-Jon

Some tracks require it. Other than that... not much!!

I use mine a lot, probably 80-90% of the time. I think it comes down to what your overall preference is, I apparently like coupes more than convertibles!
There is currently a very healthy demand for used hardtops...if you got it and later changed your mind, you could easily get at least what you paid for it, probably more. For that same reason, it'll be hard to add a hardtop later.

Solid advice.... ill mull it over thanks

What color are you ordering? If you're going to order Ardent Red and decide not to get the top, let me know if you'd be interested in working something out - I'm looking for an Ardent Red hardtop.

I use your old one in the summer.

I have only ever taken mine off to adjust squeaks.

Not having owned my car very long (and already in for a stereo upgrade), I wasn't sure how often I'd use the hardtop. I have a Lotus M100 Elan and the problem with the soft top in that is that it does give you the dreaded wet knee syndrome. I had a fix by sticking extra canvas along the window edges but that still didn't solve the corner where the top of the windshield meets the top of the window. In any case, I found that top to be warm enough (although I have never had in below 50 degree weather on any kind of regularity). So, I figure, the hard top for the winter months but soft top and no top from spring through fall (say April - Oct.). It seems like taking it off is a pain (for the hard top) - how hard is the soft top to take on and off? If its not too bad, I figure that would be the mode to use most of the nicer part of the year. Also, isn't ingress/egress easier with no top? I'm guessing with the soft top its no different than the hard top, right?

I live in Buffalo, NY. Mine went on in Mid Oct. I like the look of it. I will take mine off in mid May. I dont drive my car when there is salt on the roads...Mid Nov. to Mid March...but I still like the look of it.
I go out to the garage and look at it!!!

It's not so much the bad weather days or the great weather days, but all the other days that the hardtop is great for. Particularly through the winter months.
I also think the Elise looks great with the hardtop, in particular the Krypton Green and Solar/Safron Yellow.
I love my hardtop!

Sold mine...regret it...picking up new one today

i use mine 0% of the time... oh wait, i dont have one and i dont want one...
seriously tho, if you like convertibles, then you will hardly be using your softtop. so, no reason to buy hardtop at all (except for track).
but if you are a coupe guy, then its a must have!
hope this helps!
Ah! almost forgot... there are some CF hardtops coming out, so you might want to get that instead of a standart one.
A:
I don't have one and I'd never use it if I did. But it's a matter of preference. Personally, if I had to have the roof on I'd be driving something else.

I think the car looks great with the HT on. I've never removed mine. Although if I lived in south Florida....

I live in Virginia and I would say that I have mine on 9 months out of the year. I keep it on during the months that it's too cold to go topless and during the summer when it's too hot to go topless. I would also add that IMHO the car looks better with the hardtop on if you care about that kind of thing.

Agreed, I think the Elise w/hardtop actually makes a better looking 'coupe' than the Exige.
Mine is on from October until Spring. Bagged and stored Spring to October.

I've had it on exactly twice: once to bring it home from the dealership, and once when I gave the car its first waxing.
Otherwise, I prefer how the lines of the car look with the matte black softtop in place - and there's not problem staying warm in VA with just the softtop.

I never use it -- but the person I sold it to does!
