Windshield Film / Safety Film

Interior Exterior

Q:
Just wanted to let elisetalk members know that we will be launching a new clear windshield film that will provide protection from road debris / breakage. This film is clear and is approximately 3 times thicker thicker than standard window tint. It is installed on the exterior and have tested it with sling shots, center punches w/o breaking or cracking the glass. The sling shot tests did not damage the film at all while the center punch placed a pin sized mark on the film that cannot be located if you are standing by the car....only from approximately 6"s away would you find it.
We are also launching a new security film for side windows in which is filmed from top to bottom (of the glass). Film comes in various shades of tint and has been tested with baseball bats and center punches on European cars. Film will provide protection from dangerous shards of glass in an accident, especially in a side impact. For most vehicles, we would film the interior of the glass.....for higher profile vehicles, we would also film the exterior for maximum protection.
Videos / pics along with description or these new products will be up on our website (www.premiermobilegroup.com) in approximately 3 weeks. Installation of these new and exciting products will be available by early May.

Given that you have periodically visited this forum for a while, I guess you already know to be prepared for a technical grilling on the product. So, since I was a satisfied customer of yours for the paint film installation, I'll start.
Having already suffered through one broken windshield, I am certainly interested in glass protection. However, I will want a lot of technical insight into the product and its track record of holding up to sun, weathering, windshield wipers, sand blasting, etc. Also, I will want to know how clear it looks relative to glass, particularly as it ages under normal use conditions. Will it have a slightly hazy look and some headlight glares like when a regular windshield gets a filmy buildup? I prefer as much hard and objective data as possible over subject "holds up great" or "looks great" type of statements.

I have much of the same questions as Chris.
I like to use my Elise in all weather, and often the roads are pretty dirty.
One more questions, how are they to remove? Assuming they get pitted etc.
I would also me intersted in costs for a replacement rocker area coverage. If you have any install places up this way (Port Angeles, WA) or not.

I picture myself sitting in a car with this film, unconscious after a bad accident. EMS and Fire are on scene and need to come in through the windshield to extricate me. I imagine the firemen standing around with a WTF look on their faces after a centerpunch fails to break the windshield. Meanwhile, the few minutes that could mean the difference slip by.

But given that our windshield frame is not structural, they might just rip it away with their hands or a prybar, or cut through it with a power saw real quick.
When my windshield was broken, it was with a large rock. I seriously worried that it would come through the windshield. It smashed (not cracked) the glass in the area it hit.
Also, in San Diego, there has been a rash of people throwing rocks at car windshields while the cars are driving. One woman was killed by a rock that broke through the windshield.

What about a clear or almost clear windshield film that filters uv rays to protect the interior. There are also films that reduce heat transfer while being clear. Our AC systems need all of the help they can get in Texas. Would also be interested for our other cars.

If it's anything like the tear-offs they use in NASCAR; I would like to see it !

Great stuff.

I wouldn't worry about EMTs getting through windshield film. They won't be sissy-footing around trying to figure out how to chip it just so.
I'm more worried about headlights at night blooming into luminous stars.
Daily wear against road grit -- hazing.
Windshield wiper leaving marks.
Wavy/ripple look in daylight.
UV-exposed lifespan. Demands on a windshield film would be much higher than anything on paint -- even the slightest yellowing would be noticed.

All important questions that will be answered ChrisH. First of all, the film has a scratch resistant coating, which not only helps keep the film looking clear over time, but it also reduces glare from night time driving. Even though the film is clear, it does block off 99% of UV rays via its patented psa (pressure sensitive adhesive). As for EMTs or emergency personnel, they would be using pry bars and axes (not center punches) that would pull the entire windshield off of the frame. The film is designed to take up impact from road debris and not tools used for glass removal.
ChrisH is right. There are many reports each year of objects falling off of trucks that come right through our safety glass (windshield - two ply with pvc film in between to keep the glass from breaking apart toward occupants) and create serious injury & / or death. Although having the film added to the windshield does not guarantee that such an incident couldn't happen, it just provides us with a bit more protection from our highways.
Huper Optic makes solar film, which is installed on the interior of the car. It does provide excellent heat reduction; however, it does not work the way safety film is designed to work. Again, the windshield protection product that we are speaking of are installed on the exterior of the windshield (name will be provided in a few weeks as we finalize the details with the manufacturer as well as confirm warranty & exact performance specifications) =. More information of this product will be released by mid April.
