Take the GD knob off. It's easier than peeling the boot around it. The tougher part is releasing the two wire clips underneath. There are pics of them in here somewhere. Once you've done it once it's easy.

Naw, that's the second toughest part.
The toughest part is connecting those two wires back into the console on reassembly!

If you remove the knob and slide the tiewrap off the stick, you are very likely going to have to replace the tiewrap anyway during the reinstall. Just snip the tiewrap. I actually didn't even replace the tiewrap on mine, and you can't even tell, unless you diddle with it.
