Trunk Organizer/Protector

Q:
How are you folding your top(sushi or scroll)? Scroll seems to work better. Prevents rolling. Have your tried placing it in the area I recommend?
A:
I always liked elastic cargo nets. Light and cheap, and can be used for items of a variety of shapes. Simply pull it back and stick the soft top underneath it. All you would have to do is find places to mount the corners.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with this concern. The manufacturer just told me they should have a prototype ready within 2 weeks. I'll post pictures ASAP.
They have reviewed the posts on this thread and are taking your comments into consideration while designing the organizer.

one thought for the manufacturer to think about, and everyone as well.
i keep a terry cloth bath towel in the boot for two reassons:
1. when i open the boot i pull it out and over the body to avoid any scratching when i lean in. though i am very careful.
2. i also push it up against the soft top (scrolled roll) to avoid it rolling back.
colinsmix, maybe the mfg could think about part of their unit that pulls out and acts as a cover for the body? just a thought.
thanks,
t. a.

So like why would you have lots of stuff in your trunk? Small hard objects should go under the battery cover (like tools, etc) especially if you get rid of the stock battery and get a Braille or a Odyssey 680 or 545... plenty of space.
As for the soft top, if you don't have the touring pack (extra insulation which falls off anyway) then put your soft top behind the seats in the passenger compartment. Mine fits fine and I always have the seat back all the way...
So what the ???

Car Cover and Shoe box with normal shoes in it
A:
right now i am using some carefully selected sizes of little cardboard boxes - and was thinking of making my own, but i would buy something too
A:
why not just make 2 straps, with velcro on either end, have them go over the storage bag and the velcro on both ends attaches to the trunk liner...

I tried that... the carpeting moves!
Instead I mounted a pair of 1 inch "D-Rings" to the floor - strips of aluminum flashing material folded thru the D-Ring and then pop-riveted to the boot floor, then cut to slits in the carpet and pass the D-Ring thru the slit, thread a 1" strap thru the D-Ring and you're set to go!
Securely holds the top in place and can be used to hold other stuff like bags, and such.
Cheers
Kiyoshi
P.S. I'll try to get around to showing some better pixs and diagram the D-Ring & how I attached to the car

So what the ???
I use mine as a daily driver. So, I'm putting stuff in the trunk all the time. Especially if I have a passenger.
Groceries
Shoes
Laptop Computer
Removable cupholder when I'm not using it
All the cr@p I end up taking home with me from car shows, etc.
Hats
Jackets
Change of clothes
Items from the weekend Home Depot runs
etc.
etc.
etc.

I currently hold my top in place in the boot using two Velcro straps. The straps are left over from my kids soccer days - they are used to hold the nets to the goal frame. The straps are double sided, so they stick to them selves wrapped around the top bag, and to the carpet. It works pretty well. In fact it is a pain to get the top loose and would be a problem if I actually used the top.

One problem with holding things down with Velcro is that the carpet isn't designed for it, and I fear for the long term life of the carpeting. The other problem is that it doesn't like to let go, and I pretty much pull the carpet out of wack getting the top loose, and I have to straighten it back out each time.

You never want loose things rolling around in the boot. One good corner, and something can roll sharply into the side of the rear and cause a nice crack. It is very common on old Elans to have stress cracks from things inside the boot.

I mounted a pair of 1 inch "D-Rings" to the floor I've been planning to do something along those lines...

One nice addition would be a reasonably priced "bag" that could snap onto the snaps at the front edge of the vertical carpeting in the boot for small things. Combined with the D-Rings in the floor, it would keeps things from moving around back there.

I have a helium tank I bought at costco to fill balloons. I think I will fill the boot with helium balloons to act as cushions, and as an added benefit, my car will weigh even less

A:
I purchased a "Lotus" trunk organizer with velcro on the bottom. It doesn't move around in my trunk and my soft top in the bag is wedged tightly between the organizer and the engine wall.

A:
Something like this is sorely needed. If it was form-fitted to allow use of the whole trunk but could provide some protection for the lights and body panels and was priced reasonably I'd buy one immediately. I agree.
A:
Any update on this? Colin, any sketch or prototype photo yet?
I know Tony needs one of these, after getting that paint crack... And I want to avoid one, myself...
Thanks!

Lillie has the final prototype in her car. It looks really great and truely helps organize those of us with a 'trunk-full-of junk' We've kicked off production with Westside (thx Colin!) as of last Friday and expect parts in about 2-3 weeks.
A:
do you have a picture of it? and maybe a pic with a car cover and shoe box in it?
A:
You can easily fit a car cover and a shoe box and a brief case and a....
It is awesome! I never thought I needed a trunk organizer until I put it in the car. It will NEVER come out again, except at the track. And even then we thought of something brilliant.
First I would remove all the carpeting and battery cover from inside the trunk. This would equate to ~9lbs. Who needs carpeting when you have a ~4 lb trunk organizer.
At the track I would remove the cargo holder. I would then place all my junk inside the cargo holder rather than on ground. Keep my pit nice and tidy and all of my contents (including soft top) nice and clean.
I am so excited. I'll send pictures out soon with final pricing!
